Paul Azinger, Captain of the 2008 USA Ryder Cup team that won the trophy from the Europeans, Tweeted this after the news of Tiger Woods withdrawing from The Players Championship because of a neck injury:
“Could this have been prevented with a good Swedish massage?”
Interesting (and amusing) reax from Azinger considering he piloted the Americans to the 2008 Ryder Cup win without Woods, who was out with a knee injury.
Perhaps Azinger was thinking the same thing many of us were when Woods withdrew today. Woods won the U.S. Open on a broken leg and wrecked knee but can’t finish a round with a pain in the neck?
Though Azinger did draft Woods as a ceremonial member of the team that year.
In doing so, Azinger said:
“I’m going to have an open phone line to Tiger during the event. I am curious to see how he feels as things unfold. He’s really intelligent and has a great golf mind, so I’m looking forward to talking to Tiger. It’s one of my great regrets of this Ryder Cup that he’s not going to be participating in these matches.”
Unless the two had a falling out since then, I’m assuming Azinger meant no harm by his Tweet. (And it is damn funny.)
Though you can’t help but think that Woods, after just suffering an apparently serious neck injury, won’t be amused if/when he finds out about it.
