A former women’s basketball star at a Catholic university then becomes a high school softball coach? I’ll have to double check to make sure I got all of my stereotypes correct, but that sounds to me like a recipe for lesbian sex with an underage player.

Raenna Jewell, who was a 1000-point scorer at Gonzaga, was arrested last week on charges she had sex with a 16-year old player on the freshman softball team. As seems to be par for the course these days, she allegedly texted the girl inappropriate images. Rest assured, your humble blogger did his due diligence in finding evidence of said inappropriate pictures. That is, until I saw what Ms. Jewell looked like.

This is the second coach at the school to be arrested for sex with their players in the past two months. So, you know, if you’ve got a daughter in Arizona, you might not want to push her into sports.

The relationship between Jewell, 25, and the student at Apache Junction (Arizona) HS began in December, but was kept under wraps until the girl’s mother found suspicious text message on her phone. No word on whether those suspicious texts were the same ones as the inappropriate images mentioned above, but if so, that would have made for an awkward family dinner.

Jewell, who also coached basketball at the school, is charged with sexual conduct with a minor and luring a minor for sexual exploitation. She’s being held on $750,000 bail, which seems like an awful lot for a state that let Charley Barkley off with a slap on the wrist. Interestingly, Jewell quit her job just nine days before her arrest, which means there’s more here than meets the eye.

And what is in the water at Apache Junction High School? Two months ago, a male coach of the girl’s basketball team was arrested for carrying on a relationship with a 17-year-old player. I know Arizona’s known for its beautiful women, but at least wait til they enroll at ASU.
