The New York Yankees are out of the MLB postseason for the first time since 1993. (Hopefully TBS has fixed its ads by now.) So, what do you do with the man who help put together such an underachieving team? Sign him to a three-year extension, of course!
Kat O’Brien of NEW YORK NEWSDAY reports that Brian Cashman has inked a new deal that will keep him as Yanks’ GM until 2011. Although terms were not immediately released, Cashman’s new contract is reportedly worth about $6 million - or about 2 innings’ worth of work for A-Rod.
Not bad for a 3rd place finish in the AL East. Cashman had considered moving his managerial talents elsewhere, such as Seattle. But O’Brien lists some of the reasons why Brian chose to remain in the Bronx:
At the heart of Cashman’s decision were a number of factors: what is best for his family, the dynamic of working with the Steinbrenner sons, the chance to see through his youth movement on the Yankees and what challenges working as a GM elsewhere might entail - perhaps more autonomy but certainly with a smaller payroll.
Let’s see - best for his family? The money’s good. Working with the Steinbrenners? Never a dull moment. The Yankees’ youth movement? O’Brien must have meant to say the movement to buy up other teams’ stars (i.e. CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, etc.). More autonomy but smaller payroll? But think of all the money he’ll make taking direct orders, instead of being weighed down by the burden of having to make up his own mind.
Looks like Cashman made the right choice. But it’s going to be strange for Brian not to have anything to do during October. Guess he could always lead some Yankee Stadium tours.
