Andrea Jaeger, one of a series of female tennis phenoms America has thrown up the ATP charts, has told the DAILY MAIL that a fight with her domineering and abusing father led her to throw the 1983 Wimbledon ladies’ final against Martina Navratilova 6-0, 6-3. Jaeger also claimed previously to intentionally fail to win other matches that would make her #1 in the world.
She claimed in previous interviews that the emotional strain of the fight(s) with her father caused her to be emotionally drained for that final. Jaeger last won a singles title in 1983; she has since gone on to become an Episcopalian nun and joined many other athletes in pushing for other athletes to consider philanthropy in their lives.
It’s also possible an admittedly emotionally fragile girl ran into the buzzsaw that was Martina Navratilova in her prime and buckled under. As golfers today have proven, a dominant force in the sport can cause them to play worse. No one wanted to take on Martina once she put down the Big Macs and picked up the free weights.
And if we may take the bold step of quoting WIKIPEDIA, we found this sentence compelling: “Jaeger’s career win-loss record against other top players was 3–17 against (Chris) Evert, 4–11 against Navratilova, 2–8 against Tracy Austin, 6–8 against Hana Mandlikova, and 2–4 against Pam Shriver.” There’s some cherry-picking there, but the point is well-taken.
