Wizards Owner Wants $50M In Tax Money For Upgrades To 9-year-old Arena

NBA OWNER TO TAKE BITE OUT OF TAXPAYERS? Abe Pollin, the owner of the Washington Wizards, wants District taxpayers to foot the bill for $50M in upgrades to the team’s home arena, the 9-year-old Verizon Center.

The WASHINGTON POST reports District officials “are discussing whether to honor the request and pay for it with a tax increase on tickets.”

Pollin wants the money to upgrade “all or some of its 110 luxury suites and replace its outdated scoreboard.

After those proposed renovations to the luxury boxes, the Wizards owner plans to more than quadruple the price of suites, which have been leased for $100,000 annually since the arena opened, to $450,000 annually for ten years.

With all that money floating around, you would’ve thought that Pollin by now would’ve upgraded his outdated bridge work as well.
