The ALLENTOWN MORNING CALL (via FAN IQ) has news that will have the parents of country club kids yearning to play college sports no doubt bubbling over with excitement: the NCAA is considering realigning some member schools into “Division IV.”
No, they didn’t happen upon the idea after watching Duke football last season.
Amazingly, Division III has the largest faction of participating institutions, and there are dozens of schools likely to be added to that category in coming years. So apparently a DIV is something that needs to be done.
Franklin & Marshall College president John Fry, chairman of the Division III Presidents’ Council: “The status quo in Division III is not a workable option.. We must have fundamental change in the structure of the division. The tent has been stretched far enough.”
Don’t expect anything to happen soon (not that you’re on pins and needles unless you’re looking to tryout for the Slippery Rock tennis squad), as many DIII school are expect to fight the reorganization with the thought that a demotion to a lower level could “hurt recruiting.”

We’re actually keen on the whole idea, if it means adding more female student-athletes. You just can’t get enough swim team teenies.
