Payton Popular With Rookies Visiting Hall of Fame

Now that all NFL rookies are required to take a trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, ESPN’s HASHMARKS wants to know which player’s exhibit is the most popular destination.

And how sweet it is to see that Sweetness is often at the top spot.

Walter Payton

Walter Payton is the player of choice many rookies coming to Canton want to check out. According to Hall of Fame tour coordinator Joe Horrigan, the former Chicago Bears RB seems to be “the one guy they all seem to know.”

So, what makes #34 the #1 in so many rookies’ hearts?

“It’s just the mystique. I think it’s the personality, the nickname ‘Sweetness,’ and everyone really revered him as a guy that put his heart and soul into the game.”

And watching all those NFL Films highlight shows at 2 a.m. on ESPN2 didn’t hurt - and neither does playing all those classic modes in Madden.

Sure, it’s great to see the late Walter Payton get so much adulation. But where’s the love for all the other fine Bears backs throughout the years? Curtis Enis? Rashaan Salaam? Cedric Benson?

We kid, of course. There’s nothing very memorable about those Midway Monsters - in a positive sense, anyway.
