VA TECH AD WON’T CONDEMN DOG MURDERING ALUMNUS: Let us introduce two words into the vocabulary of Virginia Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver:
No. Comment.

Weaver this week tells the ROANOKE (VA) TIMES that the Hokies have no intention of disassociating themselves from Vick. The school has retired the QB’s number and “The Merryman (football) Center contains Michael Vick Hall, which features displays of former Tech football greats and serves as the hallway for football meeting rooms and an auditorium. Virginia Tech named the hallway after Vick in exchange for a donation he made.”
Weaver: “I don’t think we do anything at this point.”
And according to the Roanoke newspaper, there’s plenty of Tech fans who concur with Weaver’s embarassingly tolerant attitude:
• Doug Myers of Christiansburg (VA), a Lane Stadium usher on game days: “He’s done a lot of good for the school … He basically put Tech on the map.”

• Willis Burgess, who moved to Blacksburg last year from Augusta, Ga.: “Dogfighting, it’s a big deal, but he didn’t take a human’s life. That’s my culture. I’ve … seen many dogfights in my day, and we don’t look at it as it being treacherous.”
• Rhonda McCoy, a Blacksburg resident who often attends Tech games: “Coon hunting’s not illegal. Coon dogs go out and chase [raccoons], and it’s the same thing as dogfights. Just because people make mistakes, you don’t have to condemn them forever.”
• VT football season-ticket holder Rob Boyd of Christiansburg: “What happened was in his NFL career.”
• VT football season-ticket holder Jeremy Burns of Blacksburg: “He made a mistake and it’s a very serious mistake, but he’s done a lot of good for the university.”

Well if it’s any consolation, at least the people who run the Canadian Football League aren’t similarly, blind, complicit dumbasses. The CANADIAN PRESS reports that the league now has rules in place to prevent bad acts like Vick from escaping the NFL to north of the border.
