Video: U.S. Open Tennis Fans Fight *UPDATE*

Three fans were captured on video fighting in the upper deck of Arthur Ashe Stadium during a U.S. Open match Thursday between No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia and unseeded Philipp Petzschner of Germany.

Follow Brooks on Twitter for daily, real-time updates.

The ugly spat started when a woman reportedly complained to a male fan about his loud use of expletives during the Djokovic-Petzschner match. In a subsequent argument with the male fan, who was in his early 20s, the woman slapped him across the face. (See above video.)

After the woman slapped the younger man, he began verbally antagonizing her and her older male companion. Things then got physical between the men, with the older man grabbing the younger man by the neck:

The men eventually both fell backwards down three rows of seats. When the younger man returned to his seat, he was again confronted by the woman who attempted to punch him. The woman missed and the younger man pushed her away. Onlookers and security personnel then descended on the younger man, ending the outburst.

Though the older man and woman - who were reportedly father and daughter - appeared to have started the physical portion of the confrontation, there’s no doubt from watching the video that the younger man initiated the entire incident with antagonizing language.

Something tells me alcohol may have been a factor in the incident.

The USTA confirmed after the incident that the three principles were ejected from the stadium but that no arrests were made. Their identities were not made available, but as the melee happened in New York City, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get some significant followup from the people involved - thanks to the local tabloids.

Djokovic went on to defeat Petzschner 7-5, 6-3, 7-6. (The match was stopped during the fan altercation.)

Oh please. I’m sure the Founding Fathers had offensive, rude, and unecessary language in mind when they emphasized freedom of speech. There is a time and a place, this was not it. If you think Constitutional rights is an excuse for abandoning basic human decency then you have the IQ of a cactus and an attitude to match.

This is just plain stupid, yea maybe the young guy was using the f-bomb or whatever and there are alot of people who dont liking the bad language, I am one of them, However it is a public sporting event, so if you dont like what someone has to say either deal with it or leave no need to get in someone elses face, free speach is a right to all of us. the yound guy also maybe was in the wrong for pushing the lady, but what would you do if some guy came after you after being smacked in the face, then you get up and she is trying to choke you, then the security clearly had no clue what went on cus they just attacked the young guy when clearly he was the one who was getting attacked by the lady and the older guy…..thats justice for you…

Everyword should not be beep beep beep beep but if you feel the need to let a foul comment out your mouth bc something your player or team did to disapointe you then let your passion fly. Just because you’re in the right doesn’t mean you have a right to do it. The young guy was in the right. As long as he was operating within the framework of the constitution he’s “In the right”. Now, should he have cursed in front of a woman(lady), No! Should he have agrued with a woman like that, No. Should they build the mosque so close, No. But, according to the law they are “In the right”.
The old man should have picked a better angle and used his weight against the guy. He was “In the wrong” but it would have been right.

  34. Gravatarolder should mean wiser
    3:48 pm on September 3rd, 2010

age should bring wisdom. you don’t physically assault a stranger no matter what craziness comes out of their mouth. nor should you continue to argue with someone who is screaming profanity at you. you certainly shouldn’t attempt to tackle said person. the old couple was COMPLETELY in the wrong and acted in a wildly immature fashion in response to the younger man’s immaturity…the difference is, the older couple had DECADES to learn how to respond in a more civil fashion to such behavior. Both the older figures in this situation should be arrested. A few weeks in jail might help them learn better coping strategies. When the old man tackled the young man, they both could have seriously injured an innocent third party when they fell into the stands. That was a very reckless move that deserves a serious punitive response from the law. I am ashamed to hear that the older couple was not arrested for physically escalating this fracas.

I watched the first video again and again, and I stand even firmer in my initial opinions. NEVER, and I repeat, NEVER, did the “f” bomber strike anyone. He didn’t strike the large woman when attacked, he didn’t strike the old fart when attacked, nor did he swing at any of the do-gooders who arrived to restore order. He showed restraint I think most of us would not be capable of. And tennis is a boring, self-centered, elitist sport(I had to get that one in!). That’s why i love seeing the Williams sisters win. As far as I know, and it’s admittedly not much, they are the only tennis stars who didn’t come from a life of luxury and priveledge. But if i can expect to see a brawl or 2 in the stands, then I may watch tennis other than to see (hopefully) a crotch shot of one of the fine female players!

I never heard him curse during the match until the lady got up in his face. night matches at the open are loud and the crowd is involved. no one was talking during the points. if that was the case , he needs to be removed. but talking and even cursing is allowed between points unless you are screaming, which he definitely wasn’t. I yelled the F bomb in the bleachers at Yankee stadium and almost got tossed, back in 1993. Yelling obscenities is not tolerated at sporting events, because of children. But again, this is a NIGHT match at the US Open, if you can’t handle the crowds don’t go or sit down in the good seats where there are more civilized people

  46. GravatarSusan
    5:34 pm on September 3rd, 2010

Do anyone see the young kid walking up the stairs while this f-bomb tirade was happening? There are rules when you are at the US Open and clearly the foul language being spewed by that idiot should have been enough to have security talk to him and attempt to settle the dispute BEFORE it escalated to the fight. The woman and older man did both commit assault & battery and the young (foul-mouthed) guy was right to NOT retaliate by striking the woman or older man. Security should have reacted sooner AND that woman should have asked security to handle the situation instead of getting in the face of that guy. So, IMHO, they were ALL wrong….foul language in front of children, assault & battery and being IDIOTS….they should be barred from attending for 2 years! I do hope that old gentleman was not hurt though. That was quite a tumble.

Mauibucky-I did look up the profanity/jail connection on the internet. I think you had better do better research. In most those cases, laws (like the one in Mi) were changed and the charges were thrown out in court. In Cincinnati, a woman charged with profanity by a police oficer is filing a lawsuit with the help of the ACLU. No, I’m sorry, the punk was the victim, not the daughter/father. And nuclear cowboys-my comment was uncalled for. But, it serves as a point. Should I be arrested for it? 58. Gravatarhahahaha
    9:03 pm on September 3rd, 2010

cowboys, you’re about as dumb as the others on here. Yes, the ticket you purchase does say they reserve the right to remove you for any reason they see fit, BUT you will not be arrested for it unless you actually commit a crime in the act. The guy in MI who was arrested for profanity was arrested for not complying with law enforcement. The cop told him to shut up and the guy continued to disobey the authority. He was then arrested and charged with that crime, not for swearing. It says so in the official public police report. Even if the beastly woman wasn’t so beastly and actually a hot chick I think the public would be even more outraged. Reason: if she was hot then the young guy would probably have been ganged up on and lynched. The man did NOT threaten or induce physical contact, therefor his freedom of speech is in tact. The crime of disturbing the peace can be used here ONLY if the person in charge of the venue decides to press charges, the other fans must rely on the management staff of the US Open to do it since it’s a binding contract once your purchased ticket has been used and you are in the stadium for the event and that removes you ability to file charges yourself for disturbing the peace.

You might want to go read ‘how to become a lawyer for dummies’ and focus on the 1st amendment and it’s exceptions chapter. Cursing is not protected by the 1st amendment when used to threaten others, enciting emotional harm(only applies to minors being verbally assulted), or disobeying direct orders from law enforcement. Disturbing the peace can only be pursued by the US Open’s managerial staff and is rarely done since the tickets you purchase contain a contract that allows them to ban you for life from their events if they wish. But because she slapped him and the old guy tried choking him, he’ll only get the 2 year ban and he gets to press charges on them. They should have just informed the security team that they were being disturbed during the match. Law school rules!

Anyone else here the young guy say he could take 20 more of those slaps? LOL Just 20 more? How weak!

The young guy was yelling obsentities and the older
couple did non like it. They should have asked security to do something, rather than take it in their oun hands. In any sports stadium I have heard worse language. If they did not want to hear it, they could have moved, instead of starting the confrontation. As for the contract on the ticket, who really reads it. They pays their money, checks where the seats are and goes there. And any judge in these United States would say, “Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me. but slaps and attacks can.
The woman instigatied the matter by making the first contact and if you watched the video, you can see her turning and walking away and the young dude siting down. Then the old guy tries to sneak over and attackt the young dude, “big mistake”, then the old gal jumps on him again, both should be arrested for assault and battery. And as for alcohol being involved. Did you or anyone else see any of them imbiding. I did not.
I think once security got involved, they should have just moved one or other to another area. Not a good way to treat the fan or fans, no matter what the ticket says.
I would never go back to watch a match there again. Wrong attitude for treating somebody who is spending their hard earned money at that stadiumn.

The young guy might be an asshole, but if the “couple” hadn’t escalated to physical confrontation, this could’ve been resolved by involving security or stadium personal after her first approach about asking him to tone it down with the language. Ask once, give him a chance to comply and then bring in the authorities.

In the end, he’s still an asshole and the worst of stereotypes of young punks and New Yorkers, but you can’t put the blame on him when both the woman then the older man both physically assaulted him. He showed good restraint in not retaliating until it became an issue of self-defense.

If anyone should get arrested it’s those two.

She could have took a quick walk to find security, then have them deal with her concerns, and not engage the foul mouthed boy. But, she took matters into her own hands and slapped the boy. She is fortunate the boy did not strike her back. It does not matter how angered you may feel about what this boy had said, she had other “options”. Now, her father gets involved, gets hurt, and all because she did not choose to think. They could have also opted to move if they did not want to take that quick walk to get security. She’s fortunate that when the scuffle between her father (i’m not sure if he is) and the young boy started, the young boy did not continue with the old man. He just twisted himself away and started back up the stairs…Now really, how many of us would allow someone to slap us, and someone else choke us, and then wresteled with us, then find ourselves on the upper half of a tussle and not want to beat the other person that jumped you once you’re at an advantage point? The boy could have, but he walked away. He had people grabbing at him just because he’s the younger party and fowl mouthed. I personally don’t agree with his behavior, but it did not warrant all of that flexing from the others. Which i’m sure they had time to see what transpired before the father incident. I really hope he’s not hurt badly. And if so, he has himself and daughter to blame. I know it’s honorable to stand up for females, or what you think is correct, but again, they had other options. Competent or not, security is there for a reason, USE THEM!……Look what the outcome produced.

I was sitting nearby. The incident started much earlier than the video shows. The younger guy clearly antagonized the woman and her father. People had been trying to get security to come up there, but these seats are high in Ashe. They were coming close to the seats when it turned physical.

Let this be a lesson to women out there that their mouths get more men in fights than anything else. If she were a “smart” woman she would have taken her cell phone out calmly recorded the young man then gone to security and had him removed. Instead we saw the results of physical parenting. This woman was taught, obviously by dad, to address problems with your fist. I see the woman and the older man not only completely and legally in the wrong but now will get sued and lose money over this.
I’m surprised at all the comment made about the young man violating the law by swearing ….. so I ask all you dolts… would you rather someone yell an obscenity at your daughter or punch your daughter in the face? Yea ….. that;s what I thought. Your mouths are as ignorant as the woman and old guy that could have been followed home later and killed by “idiots” that swear at events. Not a smart school of thought people but very liberal of you to stand on your rights and ignorance at the same time.

When you have a problem with a fan, you get up out of your seat and go get an usher. You do not have the right to slap or attack them. The young man may have been in the wrong, but the woman and her dad or whatever clearly crossed the line.

Notice how no one said shet when the woman struck the young guy, really hard in the face, I might add. But when the old man attacks him, puts him in a head lock, and then loses his balance and falls on his on voalition, the crowd takes action. What if the young man had of slapped the woman’s face just as hard? What is this rule of “you never hit a woman”? I say, you do hit if they hit first… they aren’t exempt from the law, they need to learn that lesson the hard way.

This is an optimal example about how an idiot behaviour can easily be obfuscated by some guy doing something more idot…

The young guy probably was really acting as a jerk and obviously he wasn´t being respectful as expected when arguing with an elder man and a “lady”; but all of his faults became so more futil after he was attacked three times.

Don´t matter what kind of thrash he was talking before and during the squabble, at the moment the “lady” had slapped his face, is like he had turn into a gentleman. After that, he had just defend himself from other two attacks.

Well, this is the way we believe is right here down at the South America jungle… :)

the woman and the old man both go down for assault
the three guys who grab the kid after dumping the old man also would face assault charges.
you can never touch the first person who was assulted
the man was assaulted twice at the event big bucks from us tennis for no security. and your going to ban him from a public event in which he didn’t throw any punches again big bucks not to mention a federal civil right s complaint..
freedom of speech will also trumpt the woman and old man. they should have found security and a 180 degree result would have happen. cursing can only
be dealt with by event security

he backed off sat down and even when the old guy took a cheap shot at him he just back away.

Yes he might have been rude for cussing and being a tard but all you have to do is sternly ask nicely a few times and then just ignore the lamers. I think it was total bullocks that all the guys jumped on the young guy.. How sexist is that.. he was the one trying to avoid the fight and was only using words.. To be mister legal here — when you curse in public and offend someone, it then becomes disorderly conduct. However, you should not take matters into your own hands, that becomes assault.

The best decision was made by the po-po since both parties are at fault.

The better decisions would have been:

    1) young punk - don’t swear in public
    2) woman - don’t assault anyone in public
    3) old guy - retire from physical altercations

I agree that it is very annoying hearing someone constantly curse at sporting events, especially those that have no regard that kids are around … but that woman should not have taken a violent approach and should have just reported the guy over to security for his language … not sure what the old guy was thinking attacking that young man, hope he didn’t break a hip.

“No body wants to hear cursing at an event .” Whoever said this has never been to an event. There will ALWAYS be someone cursing in EVERY public event. Especially in sporting events + with beer on the drink menu. It seems old people here thing that Violence is better mean to stop a cursing spree. Because they can’t handle it! The young guy should surely press charges. He knows that everything was caught on camera so PRESS CHARGES. He didn’t make a single move on the two people so he should have nothing to worry about. The charges should simply be for assaulting. They can complain about how he cussed this and that, but it doesn’t defeat the fact that they assaulted him.

ALSO THERE IS NO LAW THAT STATES, ELDERLY PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO ATTACK YOUNG PEOPLE.

I’m so sick of morons screaming freedom of speech. That has nothing to do with this situation. Freedom of speech has to do with 1. the government, 2. you. Do any of these folks look like they are government officials? Is the US Open a government entity? No! Freedom of speech doesn’t apply… it’s a private venue with private rules and an altercation between private individuals. The venue likely has rules of its own on such things as, oh I don’t know, don’t be an antagonizing foul-mouthed moron in public. I agree that the older folks were wrong for escalating a verbal confrontation to a physical level. But the instigator is also wrong for instigating the whole thing. I think the site security did the right thing by throwing everyone out for their infantile behavior.

  97. Gravatardizz
    9:39 pm on September 4th, 2010

As a follow-up, if you want to talk laws the young man was likely committing disorderly conduct. The lady likely committed battery and the older man assault and battery. And for all you lawsuit happy folks what would suing the old couple get you? Well first you have to ask yourself what damages are you trying to compensate for. I can’t see any. But even if there were some medical bills I am guessing they are likely less than the $5000+ bill the lawyer would slam you with for even getting him involved. If it’s not worth more than that, and it isn’t, then why even think about suing. As for pressing criminal charges that would be a bad idea since all three of them would likely end up with a charge. Again common sense, don’t press a charge against persons A or B if you yourself will likely get hit with a charge as well. And that concludes our lesson in common sense for the day.

  98. GravatarJoeman
    12:43 am on September 5th, 2010

RESPECT!!!!! Is the only thing missing and could have stopped the whole thing from escalating. Ask young nicely to tone down the cursing, if he refuses, tell a security officer, if he continues talk to manager of venue. I have a different perspective on this. My wife was once pushed off of a treadmill at a Ballys by a 65 yr old man. She then complained to management and they did nothing citing the guys age as an excuse. My wife called me and I decided to confront the old bully. He told me to f==k off and spit on me. That made me pretty mad so I did not hit him but slammed him to the ground. Then the management wanted to get involved. They didn’t touch me but called the police. The police initially sided with the old guy and wanted to arrest me. I admitted slamming the guy and would have been happy to go to jail but insisted that my wife wanted to also file assault charges on the old bully. Thank god for video which clearly showed the assault on my wife. In the end no charges were filed and the old bully never bothered my wife again. Moral for me, age is not an excuse for assault .

    dizz-

If someone sues for battery, they can recover not only compensatory damages (like medical bills), but also punitive damages. In other words, it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t have medical bills; he can sue for punitive damages, since we want to create incentives for people to not use physical force against each other. Further, if he gets punitive damages, the father/daughter also have to pick up his attorney’s fees. So yes, it probably is worth it for him to sue. And that’s a good thing because people who use physical force to resolve their problems should be punished.
