This is up there with the Reggie hip-check play. Excellent heads up baseball, but nowhere in the realm of greatest world series plays.

I will have to disagree when you say the play had no effect on the next two hitter getting on base.

Damon on third effectively took away the slider in the dirt for Lidge, hit best pitch and one he used to strike out Jeter. Not the earth shattering play Stark paints, but not as meaningless as you want it to be.

The Phils made a mistake not taking Lidge out after that play (it was his responsiblity to cover 3rd) because: A.) it got in his head and B:) if he can’t throw his slider he’s worthless. All he has is a two seam fastball that tops out at 96 mph.

No one in Philadelphia can expect him to try and get the #3, 4 or 5 hitter out with just that one pitch.

I will say that the Damon play was better than the described Enos Slaughter play. The outfileds in ballparks were HUGE 63 years ago. You hit one into left-center, where the centerfielder, moving to his right, has to stop the ball, bobbles it, regains composure and throws without forward momentum and Price Fiedler could have scored from first.

Perhaps that got into Lidge’s head a little, but all the extra base did was cause McCarver to talk for 10 minutes about how Lidge can’t throw his slider now, over and over.

Buck kind of dropped the ball on the call. I didn’t realze nobody was covering third until the camera finally picked up the empty bag.
