Good news for German pole vaulter Yvonne Buschbaum: You’ve got some new equipment! And by equipment I mean penis. Just in case we weren’t clear on that, yeah.

(It’s a pole. Get it? GET IT? POLE!)
According to the German newspaper DEUTSCHE WELLE, Yvonne the “she” is now Balian the “he” after successful gender reassignment surgery. Understandably, he is elated after finishing a process that began almost two years ago, telling readers of his online diary that he “woke up in complete freedom today. The sky is wide open.” Okay then.
It’s interesting to note that Buschbaum’s procedures have come at the expense of not only a considerable amount of money (we’re assuming on that one, anyway, but there’s no way it was cheap), but his pole vaulting career as well; the treatments and hormone therapy were only possible as a result of using steroids and other banned substances. And let’s be clear, Buschbaum wasn’t too bad; while still a she, she won bronze medals in the European championships in 1998 and 2002. So while Buschbaum will still be in the industry as a coach, competition is now no longer an option.
Buschbaum isn’t available to give interviews right now; on the online diary mentioned above, he went on to say that he is “still flying on my clouds of freedom and won’t land until the end the November, at the earliest.” Flying on clouds of freedom? Sounds like someone’s enjoying the post-op morphine drip. Hey, we’re not mad at you. If nothing else, once you’re out, look up Herr Berman; he’ll hook you up with those deux-deux-deuxs. Or, I guess you’d call it, zwei zwei zwei.
