When it comes to selecting the U.S. Olympic basketball squad, who needs tryouts?
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED bounces along news that USA Basketball director Jerry Colangelo & coach Mike Krzyzewski will forgo such formalities in selecting their final roster of 12 for this summer’s games in Beijing.
Originally, 16 players were to be invited for the two-day Olympic tryouts being held in Las Vegas on June 28. But USA Basketball has no time for making extra roster decisions:
“That’s basically a plan rather than a tryout of 16 or 15 or whatever the number might have been. We’ve got a pretty good handle on the 13, 14 names, and it’s more about preparation,” Colangelo said. “They want to get on with it.”
The Dribbling Dozen is expected to be announced after the NBA Finals finish.
So, any of those on-the-bubble players hoping to get their final shot at impressing the coaches & living their life-long dream of competing for Olympic glory - tough.
