UGA, UF PRESIDENTS WANT WATER-DOWNED COCKTAIL PARTY: The ATLANTA CONSITUTION reports CBS and ESPN officials have “instructed their announcers” not to refer to the Georgia-Florida college football game in Jacksonville as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” on Saturday.
That reason: Georgia President Michael Adams and Florida President Bernie Machen “want to do away with the game’s reputation as a drunkfest for tailgaters.”
As a Georgia alum and former participant in the festivities, I can confirm that the weekend was a drunkfest before Adams and Machen appeared on the scene, and it will continue to be long after they’re gone.
CBS studio host Tim Brando reax: “If my superiors don’t want me to say it, that’s fine. But as a broadcaster, I’m a little offended by the assertion that our use of the phrase has any kind of influence over how people behave at this game.”
