I majored in Sport Management at UF in 2005. These issues came up a lot in my classes. Back then Florida was only one of five D-I schools that turned a profit. It's amazing how so many people mistakenly think the Universities pay for the coaches salary and the athletic programs.

19 of 119 (16%) Football Bowl Subdivision athletic departments turned a profit in fiscal 2006.

This is a far cry from "The reality is that at these institutions, the athletic department is a self-supporting, highly profitable wing of the university that routinely pours money back into the school on a net basis, not the other way around."
Adam J's posting is an example of why the mainstream media often looks down at blogs. I suggest that Adam J do a bit of research next time.

There are far, far more than 9. There are probably more than 9 in the SEC alone.

There are about 9 schools where the "large Division I athletic program" posts a profit. The rest are in the red every year. This is well documented in public records every year.
