Safety is not the issue.  How does the radio make the race more safe?  That tired argument holds no merit.    

Radios simply make the race too predictable.  It's probably too much to expect a resident of Venice Beach to understand the nuances of professional cycling, but I'll try to dumb it down for you.

During a race marginally gifted riders are allowed to break away from the main group of riders.  Who allows them to escape?  The directors of the stronger teams in the race.  They can let 'em go or reel 'em back in at will.  The radio facilitates, what many in racing, consider to be formulaic, uninspired, and simply boring racing.
