WILD HOGS II ON HOLD AS ALLEN STARS IN MMA VEHICLE: DAILY VARIETY reports on the first major movie that will attempt to cash in on the current mixed-martial arts craze. Tim Allen will star in a feature film called, “Redbelt”, which is a mixed-martial arts drama written and directed by David Mamet.
DV: “Allen plays a troubled action star with marital problems who meets the master when he is getting pummeled in a street fight.”
Also to make awkward cameos are MMA fighters Randy Couture, John Machado, and Enson Inque, along with retired boxer (and Santa Monica resident) Ray Mancini.
The plot sounds like a real winner: “Redbelt is the story of Mike Terry, a Jiu-jitsu master who has avoided the prize fighting circuit, choosing to instead pursue a life of honor and education by operating a self-defense studio in Los Angeles.
“Terry’s life is dramatically changed however when he is conned by a cabal of movie stars and promoters. In order to pay off his debts and regain his honor Terry must step into the ring for the first time in his life.”
AIN’T IT COOL NEWS notes the lead is Chiwetel Ejiofor, who previously appeared as a tranny named Lola in something called “Kinky Boots“. Mamet, the writer and director, is currently working on a film called “Joan of Bark: The Dog that Saved France“.
