As of right now, the most anticipated moment in sports history will not be seen on live television. Woods will make his official return to golf on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at The Masters. Though his tee time for the first round of the tournament has not yet been announced, the latest he will start will be at least two hours before ESPN’s coverage of Round 1 commences at 4pm ET.
(As it stands, live TV coverage of Tiger comeback won’t include first holes)
Last year, Woods teed off for the first round at 1:52p ET in the second-to-last threesome. The final group went off at 2:03p ET:
When I inquired to ESPN if the network was lobbying Masters officials to allow live coverage of all of Woods’ first two rounds, I was provided this well-crafted piece of diplomacy: “We have the telecast windows and have presented SportsCenter cut-ins in past and plan to this year.”
As an aside, The Masters, for no good reason in particular, is the only major tournament that still doesn’t allow its network broadcast partner to air the entire first two rounds. (Masters President Billy Payne apparently consulted with the ghosts of Walter O’Malley and Bill Wirtz on the policy.)
Don’t blame ESPN if millions around the world aren’t allowed to see Tiger’s comeback live. That said, if ESPN isn’t pushing The Masters to allow the extra coverage, it absolutely should be. If nothing else to produce an absurd claim from Augusta National on why it prevented the change.
Though my gut tells me that ESPN has broached the subject already and will do all in its power to capture potentially the biggest live shot in sports television history. Though there still is a possible, accessible outlet for live video coverage of Woods not seen on broadcast television.
The MASTERS provides live, online coverage of holes 11-13 and 15-16 on its official website.
That doesn’t account for the first holes of Woods’ round, but there is a wildcard feature that possibly could. The Masters online coverage includes something called the “Featured Group”, though I’ve confirmed that last year’s video for that area of the site was not streamed live.
So for now, there’s no indication that anyone beyond the “patrons” will witness Woods’ first drive since Thanksgiving night. Something that I’m sure suits Woods just fine.

I hear all this talk from men on how could he have been such a jerk to do this to his devoted wife…Get real, each and every man would love to do the same thing Tiger did, but they don’t have the money too. This just too much, let Tiger & Elin figure this out and lets look at Tiger as a great golfer. I could care less for what he did, all I want for him to do is get back on course to make golf more exciting to watch. None of us are perfect. If it weren’t for imperfect people they would not have chat pages and we would have to watch reruns
on tv to occupy our time. I for one, am very glad that Tiger is back playing the game he plays better than anyone else in the world. Since he started playing golf the number of golfing millionaires has gone up by 7,000 percent. If no one else is glad he is back I’m sure all the millionaire golfers are. He is still the best golfer in the world until someone takes that away from him and to tell you the truth i don’t see that happening anytime soon. Go Tiger

I only have one more comment. Whether you like Tiger Woods or not doesn’t make any difference at all. When You look at Tiger Woods, whether you like it or not, you are “LOOKING AT GOLF HISTORY.” The comical thing about what happened is that if Tiger would have been the 130th ranked golfer in the world the story wouldn’t have even been put on the wire because no body would have cared at all.

I for one do not consider Tiger as the golf “GOD”, when I watch golf I like to see everyone play, not just Tiger. i get sick of the announcers “fawn” over “the best golfer ever lived”. There are a lot of golfers that have done a lot for golf, and not just sleep with a dozen women, they didn’t have to do that to get recognition!!!!!!

I’ve really enjoyed this year. haven’t had to watch every friggin shot of Tiger’s, go to commercial and then come back and have them show what that bastard did yesterday. I’ve watched so many tournamaents where this slug was in 15th place on friday and the media assholes still show every shot of his and rarely show the guys that are up in the top places.

The masters where Mr. johnson says 56 minutes of uninterupted coverage (56 minutes of Tiger coverage). It pisses me off that they don’t show the other golfers very much and then go back and show what the Slug Tiger did yesterday. Real golfers and real golf fans do not give a shit about seeing every shot that Tiger takes in 4 friggin hours.

I agree with the Masters. They shouldn’t allow live broadcast. I think other sports should do the same thing. The Super Bowl should only show the 2nd half, the World Series should just show innings 7-9 ~ oh wait, that would be stupid!!! Masters, it is 2010, not 1967. This will be not only “the most anticipated moment in sports history” but it will give an enormous boost to the ratings for the first round of the Masters. I won’t be surprised if this is televised live, but Augusta National can be difficult in dealing with change and they usually don’t show the first or second round live. Anyway, I bet his first shot will be in a bush somewhere…

I would like all the males in here to raise their hands if they ever cheated on their wives, but never got caught. I’ll bet 7 out of 10 of you have. The only difference is probably that because you didn’t have any big time money, it wasn’t worth their while to tell your wife or the world. I really hope that all this hype doesn’t mean the cameras will follow nobody but Tiger around the course. Why should anyone else even show up to play. This is the Master’s a game awaited by many every year not just Tiger followers. I get so tired of only seeing Tiger. I think Tiger is a phenomenal player, but others deserve their share of camera time. There are some new young talented golfers coming up let’s see more of them. It’s golf not Tigertime.
