Tiger’s Putt Puts NBC’s PM Soaps On Back Burner

On the 18th hole at Torrey Pines on Sunday, Tiger Woods did what Tiger Woods always does - plunk down a perfect putt to put himself in position to pull off another major victory.

Rocco Mediate Tiger Woods

(”How do you keep DOING that?“)

The Golfer Formerly Known As Eldrick sank a 12-foot putt on the final hole of the U.S. Open, placing himself in a tie with Rocco Mediate at the top of the leaderboard - and forcing an 18-hole playoff to be broadcast by ESPN (Noon-2 p.m. ET) & NBC (2 p.m.-conclusion) today.

These are the kind of performances that get you on Gatorade bottles. And hook you up with hot Swedish honeys. And cast you in commercials carrying on as Caddyshack’s Carl Spackler.

With yet another stupendous swing to add tho his highlight reel, is it a foregone conclusion that Tiger will claw up yet another fantastic fairway finish?

The 32-year-old Woods is ranked #1 in the world. The 45-year-old Mediate is #157. Tiger has taken 13 majors titles. Rocco has reeled in none.

So, Tiger should be able to roll Rocco into the Pacific and claim tourney title #14, right? Well, any good roll deserves some buttering up:

“Rock is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet,” Woods said. “He’s been a friend of mine ever since I’ve been out here on Tour. We’ll talk. But we’ll also understand we’re trying to win a U.S. Open. And we’ll have our moments where we’ll go our separate ways and be focused for each and every shot.”

Mediate was a bit more direct in surveying the situation:

He wants to kill me, I want to kill him, that’s just how it is.”

But seriously, folks:

“I get to play for the national Open against the best player on earth, that maybe has ever played,” said Mediate, who made the U.S. Open through a playoff in the qualifying rounds. “How much more could you ask for? I couldn’t be happier.”

A little known fact about Rocco’s past playoff performances - he’s 2-0 in extra holes. Yeah, the wins were back in 1991 & 1993, but he still has previous playoff success going for him, which is nice.

Despite all his trophies, trophy wives and TV spots, there is one thing Woods doesn’t have that Mediate does - a song by INXS:

Then again, maybe there is something in the band’s catalog that could apply to Tiger. Considering he always wins, maybe “Don’t Change“? Or “Suicide Blonde“, to honor his past attempt at a new hairstyle?
