Unless you’ve been under a rock for the past week, you know that the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is today. NBC will be bringing you the two hours of pageantry and buildup, followed by two minutes of heart-pounding action. You know, just like your weekend plans. But with horses.
That’s obviously a pedestrian perspective from someone without a firsthand account of the festivities. Everyone that’s actually been to the derby says it’s awesome…in its own way.
Those people almost never watch the actual race, but rather show up at the track and drink all day, just like another specator “sport” from the south. And BUSTED COVERAGE was good enough to bring us this excellent photo essay on the seedy, sweaty underbelly of Derby Day. Adding excerpts from Hunter S. Thompson’s The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved was an excellent touch.
My favorite pic of the lot is the one where the drunk idiots are being stupid. Seriously, I don’t think it matters whether it’s cars or horses that are running in circles around the track. I hope the governing bodies of track and field are taking notes. The fun starts at 4 PM today.
