Rumor: Volunteers Have A Mens Hoops Team Too

Most people know that the University of Tennessee has a football team, a women’s basketball team, and some even know they have a curling team. But men’s basketball team? R… Really? Hey, how about that.

Tennessee Volunteers - mens and womens

One has to hope Bruce Pearl and his band of men don’t have an inferiority complex while brandishing the same orange “T” as Pat Summitt and her ladies. After all, the Lady Vols have reached the Round of 16 every year under Summitt, whereas the Dude Vols are in the Sweet 16 for the fifth time only, and they’ve never reached the Elite Eight.

Tonight Tennessee can reach new ground with a win over neighboring state rival Louisville (9:57 p.m. ET). They had a little trouble with 15th-seed American University before pulling away, then let Butler take them to overtime, at which point the Vols finally disposed of the Fighting Butlers. Those first two games don’t bode well for their Elite Eight (and beyond) hopes, even without considering that Louisville is sorta good.

But no worries, Pearl and Co. If the men can’t bring home a regional championship, the defending women’s national champions will likely be there to pick up the slack, while the men stay home taking care of the house and the baby. Which, granted, is as equally noble a task in the grand scheme of things, but it’s not exactly something one can brag about in an athletic department media guide.

I’m just hoping that Bruce manages to impregnate Candace Parker before she graduates. That baby would be a basketball Jesus in orange.
