Catching for Rookie Pitcher Proves to be a Handful

PITTSBURGH POST GAZETTE informs us that Pirates’ coaching staff spent the days leading up to last night’s game against the Colorado Rockies stressing three points to rookie pitcher, Yoslan Herrera: 1) Throw more fastballs 2) Stop shaking off your catcher 3) Be aggressive. Judging from this photo snapped during the first inning by GETTY IMAGES, my guess is Yoslan got the message about not shaking off his catcher.

Ryan Doumit offers a helping hand to rookie pitcher

The caption found under the photo says it all, “Catcher Ryan Doumit offers some encouragement to starter Yoslan Herrera in the first inning last night at Coors Field. Herrera failed to make it out of the second inning.” When your pitching staff has a collective ERA of 5.26, worst in the majors, I guess you have to come up with creative new ways to encourage your fellow battery mate. Doumit’s helping hand didn’t do much good, Herrera lasted only 1 2/3 innings and was crushed for seven runs and eight hits in what wound up a 7-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies last night at Coors Field.
