If tennis fashion has a Berlin Wall, I think Venus Williams just tore it down:
Wish I could see the look on Joan Rivers‘ death mask.
I’m flagging this interview of the mother of the Williams sisters, Oracene, for those network execs in charge of casting The View.
(”MOM!!!”)
Venus and Serena’s mom, much to the delight of Richard Deitsch of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, gave a soft-tossing Aussie interviewer last week an earful during a visit at the Australian Open players party. I can now confirm she’s the happiest miserable person on earth.
(Whoa)
Though she had virtually nothing pleasant to say, she came off as a charming truth-teller. Best tennis interview I’ve seen in, well, forever.
Excerpts and video after the jump.
• Reggie Bush & Kim Kardashian are gonna give love another chance.
It’s gotta be the new hair!
• Those 38 wins by the Memphis Tigers two years ago? The NCAA declares that it never happened.
• That seems a bit harsh. Next thing you’ll tell me, giving cream cheese to athletes would be considered an NCAA violation.
• Plaxico Burress pleads guilty to gun possession charge, will spend the next two seasons playing for the penal pigskin league.
• First Patrick Kane, and now Aqib Talib. Why do pro athletes hate cabbies so much?
One of the most unusual side stories of the upcoming NFL season has been the spectacle that ownership of the Miami Dolphins has become. While it’s thought that Stephen Ross is still the majority owner, this summer has seen a spate of celebrities join into minority ownership.

(”Dolphins would look so good on these plates.”)
While we couldn’t have anticipated it at the time, Gloria Estefan’s decision to buy into the team (with husband Emilio Estefan - not to be confused with “Mr. Mighty Ducks” Emilio Estevez) was just a harbinger of bigger announcements to come. Soon afterward, the naming rights to the stadium were sold to another famous Miami resident, one Jimmy Buffett, and Marc Antony joined Estefan as owners shortly thereafter.
But if you’re foolish enough to scoff at that collection of names, scoff no longer, as the team is being joined by, legitimately, one of the top 20 brands in sports today.
• Grant Hill reveals that Christian Laettner is a big jerk. In other news, sky is blue, water is wet, Duke is overrated.
• A former U of Minnesota running back can’t leave the state to attend an NFL tryout - just because he’s an “untreated sex offender“.
• There’s nothing like a buzzer-beater to punch your ticket to the Big Dance.
• The Yankees hope to have the healthiest ballpark in the league.
• Delaware seems determined to take a gamble on sports betting.
Venus & Serena Williams will soon be welcoming a new stepmother into the family. And the sisters should have a lot in common with their new mom - such as their age.
Jose Lambiet of the PALM BEACH POST’s PAGE 2 LIVE lobs up the news that 67-year-old tennis dad Richard Williams is engaged to 30-year-old Lakeisha Graham. To put it in perspective, Lakeisha is only one year older than prospective stepdaughter Venus & two years older than prospective stepdaughter Serena.
When Tiger Woods and his wife had a son on Sunday, there were a lot of jokes about how in two years he was going to be better than half the golfers on the PGA Tour. They were jokes, sure, but really were they that far off? I mean, after all, wasn’t Tiger only two years old when he appeared on The Mike Douglas Show? The truth is, parents are getting their kids started in sports earlier and earlier in hopes of cashing in on their progeny.
One such sport where this has been prevalent for a while is tennis. Stars such as Venus Williams, Serena Williams, and Maria Sharapova were trained as children to be tennis machines, and it paid off in the form of millions of dollars in winnings and endorsements. Which is why if you’re going to train your little girl to be a tennis pro, you should probably hire the same coach who taught those three. Even if your daughter is only four years old.
Someone finally had the nerve to expose Venus & Serena Williams for who they were. Um, wait, check that - someone finally had the nerve to expose themselves during a Venus & Serena Williams match.
(Fellas, it’s never a good sign when ladies laugh at your naked body)
REUTERS reports that a streaker strutted his stuff during an Aussie Open doubles match between the Williams Sisters and Aymui Morita & Martina Mueller. The man showed the world what he’s made of down under for a good 14 seconds before security took him away.
So how did this nude net fan court the crowd’s attention for so long?
Long before Venus and Serena Williams began dominating the world of women’s tennis, the road for African-American female tennis players was being paved by Zina Garrison. Garrison was ranked as high as #4 in the world among women back in 1989, and in 1990 she became the first African-American woman to reach the Wimbledon finals in 1990 where she was defeated by the 1,342nd lesbian to reach the Wimbledon final, Martina Navratilova.
Since she retired in 1996 Zina has spent her time working with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) as a coach in the Fed Cup, and then as captain of the Fed Cup team since 2004. She also coached the U.S. Women’s tennis team in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Well, she was recently let go by the USTA as Fed Cup captain and Zina isn’t quite sure what she’d done to be let go from the job aside from being black, so now she’s suing the USTA.
