Pitt Hires UW Assistant Chryst As Football Coach

In a Thursday morning press release, Pittsburgh announced that Wisconsin assistant football coach Paul Chryst has agreed to become its head football coach.

Paul Chryst

Chryst will be introduced to the public at a 3pm ET press conference at the Panthers’ practice facility.

Multiple sources also confirmed that Chryst will retain his duties as offensive coordinator of Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, with one source indicating to SbB that will entail Chryst spending “three days in Pasadena.

Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez played a key role in Pitt’s decision to hire Chryst, as a source close to the Pitt program told SbB that the former longtime Badgers football coach convinced longtime friend and influential Pitt booster A.C. Dellovade to champion the Chryst candidacy to other prominent Pitt donors and officials.

Chryst, who is credited for an impressive makeover of the Wisconsin offense dating to 2005, replaces Todd Graham, who coincidentally got the nod over Chryst for the Pitt job last year - before abruptly departing for Arizona State a week ago.

Panther on ‘Liar’ Graham: ‘I feel like dirt, abused’

In departing for Arizona State today, ex-Pittsburgh football coach Todd Graham chose to inform Panther players of the news via forwarded text message from a Pitt football staffer.

Todd Graham is a liar

As you might expect, such a lack of respect from a now-former coach did not sit well with at least one Pitt football player: Panther receiver Devin Street.

Devin Street eviscerates Todd Graham on Twitter

In a series of Tweets today, Street eviscerated his former coach - and Graham’s wife Penni - with the following entries to his personal Twitter.com account:

As also noted by Scout.com national recruiting analyst Bob Lichtenfels, Graham’s wife Penni, along with others close to the former Pitt coach, immediately deleted their personal Twitter accounts after the news broke of Graham’s ASU move:

Graham no time to talk to players but Penni Graham, Maria Norvell, Mike Norvell, Bo Graham had time to delete Twitter accounts

Though in the context of Graham’s abrupt departure, Street did impart at least one Tweet that Pitt fans might qualify as good news:

Devin Street is not a quitter

Picture Of Trump’s Note Scolding UM President

The University of Miami confirmed this morning that a note scratched out on a newspaper in which Donald Trump recently scolded UM President Donna Shalala for not hiring Mike Leach as the school’s football coach in 2007 is authentic.

The note from Trump reads:

You made a big mistake when you did not take my advice and hire Mike Leach of Texas Tech … and you can now get him for the right price

Before Miami hired now-fired Randy Shannon in 2007, Trump sent a letter of recommendation on Leach’s behalf to Shalala.

The PALM BEACH POST reported on it at the time:

“In a letter sent this week to UM President Donna Shalala, Trump refers to Texas Tech’s upset victory of No. 3 Oklahoma on Saturday and reminds Shalala that he strongly recommended that (Mike) Leach be given the Hurricanes’ job.”

Trump wrote in the letter, “You are my friend, but you should have listened to me. If you did, your team would be fighting for the National Championship.”

Shalala’s response: “I got the letter and I laughed.”

Leach was eventually granted an interview for the job at that time but was passed over. Shalala, along with Miami Athletic Director Paul Dee instead went with Shannon. Current school AD Kirby Hocutt is heading up the search for a coach this time around, with input from Shalala.

The PALM BEACH POST reported today that Leach, who was fired by Texas Tech in 2009, is once again interested in the job.

“It’s a great job and I think it would be a great fit,” Leach said. “We’d have an exciting brand of football. We’ll fill the seats and we’ll win games and we’ll win ACC championships.”

In the past 24 hours, it has been widely reported that Jon Gruden has met with Hocutt about taking the job.

A talent agency source with knowledge of the Miami search and Gruden’s situation told me today that Gruden will likely not take the Miami job, though his next job will be as a college - not NFL - coach. Read more…

Tulsa Not Thrilled With Rice Halftime Show Poking Fun At Coach

TULSA FUMING OVER RICE’S HELL OF A HALFTIME SHOW: Tulsa wasn’t so entertained by the Rice University band’s halftime show “honoring” their football coach.

Todd Graham Tulsa coach

The HOUSTON CHRONICLE reports that the school has filed a complaint with Conference USA over last Saturday’s performance by the Marching Owl Band. The MOB paid tribute to the Golden Hurricane coach in a halftime skit called “Todd Graham’s Inferno“. As this handy script explains, the band chronicles their journey into Hell, where they find Graham on the last level, next to the words, “Welcome to Tulsa”.

But the biggest complaint was about the show’s finale, when the narrator ended the story by calling Graham a “douchebag”.Why all the terrible tirades toward Todd and Tulsa? Last year, Graham was on the sidelines as Rice’s head coach. But he bolted for northeast Oklahoma in the off-season - a flight that ruffled the feathers of many Owls fans.

Saturday’s show isn’t the first time the band has mocked their opponents. Back in September, the MOB made fun of Texas players’ criminal issues - during halftime on the Longhorns’ own field. But before being battered by angry Austin attendees, the MOB made a crack at rival Texas A&M and their mascot’s memorable munching episode, announcing that Reveille’s training “would no longer be outsourced to Michael Vick.”
