David Goetzl of MediaPost.com reports today that CBS has “approved a script” for the Super Bowl ad produced by the group Focus on the Family. Tim Tebow and his mother Pam will be the centerpieces of the 30-second spot, which reportedly will fetch $2.8M.

Goetzl reports the Focus on the Family ad “will not carry a pro-life message — at least an overt one.” A spokesman for CBS said the network, “will review the video version of the spot before giving it the final green light, but does not anticipate any hurdles.”

There’s been a lot of debate about the ad, given that many view religion-based Focus on the Family as a political advocacy group. The group’s leader, Dr. James Dobson, is well-known for his on the record opposition to abortion, gay marriage and homosexuality.

Much of Dobson’s widely-recognized political influence is chronicled by Washington Post website Slate.com in a 2004 piece by Michael Crowley titled, “James Dobson, The Religious Right’s New Kingmaker.”

Part of the concern for the approval of an ad from a group fronted by Dobson is that in 2004, CBS rejected a Super Bowl ad produced by the United Churches of Christ. CBS Executive Vice President Martin Franks said at the time, “The network simply does not accept any advocacy advertising of any kind.”

That’s the context for the ad that you will see Tebow headlining on Super Bowl Sunday. For all I know, the spot will be a benign affirmation of family values - as interpreted by Tebow and his mom. No biggie.

A larger issue though is Tebow generating awareness for a group with a well-chronicled, aggressive anti-gay agenda. An agenda that is often interwined with political interests.

What’s the Statute of Limitations of Tim Tebow Christmas lights? Anyone?

As an alumnus of the University of Georgia, I would be remiss if I didn’t congratulate Tim Tebow today on his spectacular career.

• Titans owner Bud Adams gives the Bills a double-finger salute - and gets fined $250,000 for it.

• After Stanford’s stunning slaughter of ‘SC, Pete Carroll & Jim Harbaugh both want to know what the deal is. (And Pete won’t forget it.)

• But the real deal is Toby Gerhart. Just ask his swim team girlfriend, who says that the Cardinal RB is “one big muscle.”

• Speaking of girlfriends, Erin Dewes has been incorrectly labeled as Tim Tebow’s squeeze. But that’s not stopping her from covering her nude self in number 15’s body paint.

• Zack Greinke is a real winner this week. Not only did the Royals pitcher grab the Cy Young award, he’s also tying the knot with former Miss Daytona Beach Emily Kuchar.

Remember this old photo of Tim Tebow?

It turns out that wasn’t his girlfriend. Instead, it’s some random woman named Erin Drewes. Well Playboy.com now has her ‘nude’, in Tim Tebow-themed body paint. She also clarifies her deal with Tebow:

We are acquaintances through mutual friends and we would see each other here and there. We were standing together talking at a party at U of F and that’s when the now-infamous picture was taken. I was never dating Tim Tebow, nor was I ever his girlfriend!  I’m convinced the picture must have been photoshopped—my breasts certainly are not that big!

She maintains she would consider posing for Playboy Magazine, but “it would have to be the right circumstance.”

Tim Tebow probably never wanted to see the day when he’d be lumped in with such damaged goods as LeGarrette Blount, Michael Vick, and - ugh - Jeff Fisher. But here it is and here we are, Tebow: Tony Dungy has come rushing to your aid. Yes, the St. Jude of sports, the patron saint of lost causes and dog killers. Dungy. Accept it.

Dungy’s latest comments came to Dan Patrick this morning when talking about drafting a quarterback for a team with a Top 10 pick. Patrick threw out alternative choices like Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, and Jake Locker. Nnnnnope. Because Tebow’s a winner, you see. Winners win games. Oh yeah.

The evidence continues to collect against the Florida Gators’ comeback win against Arkansas this past weekend. While it takes a delusionally paranoid partisan to think that referees this incompetent could actually swing a game in one team’s favor and get away with it, Arkansas certainly received no favors.

(This was a crucial personal foul call. On the guy on the left, of course; it’s not like the Florida player was trying to hit him or anything.)

But as referee calls seem to skew evermore toward the power programs of the SEC, casual fans can’t help but question exactly where the SEC’s priorities lie. Video evidence? Oh, there’s plenty of it.

The ORLANDO SENTINEL is reporting, via an inside source, that Tim Tebow will be pass his medical tests today and start against LSU.
