If it’s full-on winter, it’s cold and rainy in L.A., people are throwing logs on the fire in Chicago, there’s a hint of ash in the air in Manhattan, and Serena Williams is busying herself with lining up excuses for tanking at the Australian Open.
(Steel enclosure we’ll say!)
Not able to lament any current injuries (which is downright shocking), she instead has revealed on her website that she’s suffering from a broken heart - after getting dumped by a guy: “You cringe at these words. This is the very reason you begin to think why your heart was in that steel enclosure … because one day it always turns into this day. Tears finally come and they make you feel a little better, but the pain is piercing through your soul. Eventually you know you will try again, and eventually you know you will find the keys to your heart, but also in the back of your mind your think … it will happen again.”
Now the question is, who dumped her? (work with us, today’s gotten slow)
Those of you who enjoyed the death and destruction wrought by Muslims over the cartoon depictions of Islam in Denmark can now get excited over a somewhat similar freakout in India.
THE AUSTRALIAN reports today that “INDIAN sport is facing a fierce new controversy as ultra-nationalists targeted rising tennis star Sania Mirza after she was photographed at the Hopman Cup in Perth with her bare feet on a table alongside the national flag.”
It would be an amusing story if it wasn’t so sad. Especially when you see the photo.
The son of John McEnroe easily loses his temper? You can’t be serious!
The NEW YORK POST’s PAGE SIX spots the offspring of the teed-off tennis star causing a racket outside a West Side club.
20-year-old Sean McEnroe was trying to ace his way into the Pink Elephant club, but was getting no love from the men out front. So the soured son started double-faulting with the doormen and cursing them out, yelling, “Oh, bouncers - really good job. You’re f—ing losers!”
After the argument, Sean then fittingly “stumbled backward and fell into a pile of garbage bags.”
Obviously, young McEnroe was pretty trashed that night.
The holidays are all about the spirit of giving, and SI.com’s year in photos certainly reflects that generosity, giving us gems like this delightful vision of Serena Williams.
The capture harkens one of our favorite movie scenes, from “Raiders of the Lost Ark”:
