• If Visanthe Shiancoe’s NFL career doesn’t pan out, there’s always the open invitation to join the adult film industry.

• Carmelo Anthony’s favorite kind of record - 33 in the 3rd.
• Vassily Ivanchuk could face a two-year ban for doping - not from the NHL, but from the World Chess Federation.
• Boys & girls playing basketball together? That’s too sinful for our schools!

Found some video today of Ricky Hatton’s pre-fight dressing room before his recent win over Paulie Malignaggi.

(If only “Richard” had followed through on right cross on Liam Gallagher)
With music from Mancunian band Oasis blaring in the background, the space was thick with well-wishers, including the obligatory Sylvester Stallone appearance, plus David Beckham and Oasis members Liam and Noel Gallagher. The Gallaghers, regrettably, also joined Hatton in the ring that night.

One of the few reasons to pay attention to boxing at the moment is Ricky Hatton. He has all the markings of Raging Bull when I hear about his wonderfully massive between-fight weight gains, refusal to stop drinking during training and womanizing (ok, 2 out of 3).

(Mancunian band Oasis land world’s most expensive bodyguard)
And now you can add a severe lack of character judgment to that list, as we saw Hatton invite fellow Mancunians Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis into the ring with him before and after his victory over Paulie Malignaggi Saturday in Vegas.
Of course, Oasis is one of recorded music’s most notable trainwrecks, so it makes perfect sense that the two parties would join forces. And how Hatton would then blow off his devoted girlfriend to follow the band during their current Mexican tour.
What a grand idea! Read more…

So I’ve been out on the road with SbB Girl Wendy the past few days, hanging out in Montreal and Toronto. I’m trying to fly back to L.A. today, but weather may unintentionally ground my travel plans. (Thanks Gustav!)

(SbB Girl Wendy in Toronto (I was on trash detail))
Sunday I went to the “V” music festival in Toronto, thanks to tickets from My Boy Barry. So yea, my mind wasn’t completely on my KC Chiefs yesterday, tho I did extract perverse pleasure from see the Tom Brady injury. And my team’s accompanying, obligatory (foot)ball gag.

Oasis was the headline act of the festival, and about midway through the set, a fan ran onstage and shoved down the band’s guitarist-singer Noel Gallagher from behind (which is exactly one more hit than the Bengals defense made yesterday). The AFP reports today that after the show, Gallagher “was taken to hospital afterwards to be examined for a suspected fractured rib and ligament damage.” (video of the attack after the jump) Read more…

Last night I went to the Oasis show at Bell Centre with SbB Girl Wendy. It was my first trip to the building. (I’d previously been to the old Montreal Forum many times.)

It’s not as massive as some of the other newer arenas I’ve seen, like Staples Center and United Center, and the seating is much steeper and closer to the action. The vast majority of the seats, unlike the aformentioned facilities, are in the lower level, with the club and upper levels much smaller. Read more…

SbB Girl Wendy and I spent the day puttering around Montreal, taking in the sights. Here’s a photo of an old building, and some flags. And …

… whoa.
My own personal highlight today was making the fantastical discovery that Montreal is hosting the 2008 Le Coupe Grey (that’s Grey Cup for those of you residing in Whitehorse). Read more…

Currently I’m in Canada - soon to be joined by SbB Girl Wendy. We’ll have oft-incoherent commentary coming this weekend, so keep checking back. More details below.

(SbB at Toronto’s Virgin Festival this weekend, thanks to My Boy Barry!)
Yesterday I spent the day flying from Los Angeles to Montreal. Here’s one of the many highlights of my layover at O’Hare Airport in Chicago (nice to see the city’s most famous extinct dinosaur Bill Wirtz getting the proper tribute he deserves):

I also enjoyed the chance to stock up on all things Cubs. This Chicago airport store display featured 21 (I counted) different Cubs’ memorabilia items …

… and one White Sox item, which after the ALDS will most likely be the latest fashion trend on the streets of the Central African Republic.
On the flight from LAX to ORD, I saw something I’ve never seen. Some poor old, oxygen-tanked woman actually swapped her own stuff for that drop-down oxygen mask. She ended up making it through the flight ok. We might have lost her in the changeover, but thankfully Ozzie Guillen wasn’t sitting next to her, ‘else she’d have had to assist him with his mask first.

Just when the Euro 2008 had finally finished, another European soccer tournament is getting ready to kick off - the UEFA Cup (not to be confused with the UEFA Champions League, we think). And Manchester City (not to be confused with Manchester United) gets an interesting first-round draw.

The English club will travel to the Faeroe Islands, a Denmark-owned archipelago in the North Atlantic, to face local club Streymur on July 17. However, Man City won’t be able to host their Faeroese foes in a return match on their own home turf - since Jon Bon Jovi tore it up.
