Audio: Anderson’s Agent On Mizzou “Resolution”

The agent for Missouri basketball coach Mike Anderson, Jimmy Sexton, commented today on WHBQ-AM in Memphis about the status of negotiations between his client and the school amidst rumors that Arkansas was interested in acquiring Anderson’s services.

Video: Crushing Helmet Hit On MU QB Unpunished

Last Saturday during the Missouri-Nebraska game in Lincoln, Huskers safety Courtney Osborne, following a 15-yard sprint, unleashed a spectacular helmet-to-helmet hit on Tigers quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

Despite Referee Randy Christal staring directly at the collision, and being expressly charged with protecting the quarterback, no call was made on the play.

Though he’s seeking “a review” of the play by the Big 12 office, Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel was remarkably restrained about the hit when talking to reporters this week. Read more…

KC Star Writer, MU Grad: Nebraska Fans “Inbred”

Mike DeArmond is the longtime Missouri football and basketball beat reporter for the KANSAS CITY STAR. He’s also an alumnus of Mizzou, class of ‘72.

(Coffee much?)

Saturday DeArmond appeared on a Kansas City TV pregame show for the Missouri-Nebraska football game to give his opinion on something that can be a sore subject for more Kansas Citians than you know.

That is, dealing with local Nebraska football fans, Kansas Jayhawks hoops fans and St. Louis Cardinals baseball fans. During his TV appearance, DeArmond originally was asked what he thought of Nebraska football fans, whom he proceeded to lump together with KU and Cardinal fans:

“There are Cardinal baseball fans, there are Kansas basketball fans and there are Nebraska football fans. They were all born of the same parents. They’re all inbred, separated a birth because they’re all just impossible to handle.

MU: No Big 10, Wants Big 12 To ‘Hang Together’

Mike DeArmond of the KANSAS CITY STAR reported today:

(From Columbia (MO) Daily Tribune today)

Missouri has not received an invitation to apply for membership in the Big Ten Conference, according to a member of the University of Missouri Board of Curators.

The Board of Curators are meeting today and during a lunch break, Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton had a very interesting exchange with Vahe Gregorian of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. Read more…

Recruit: College Career Shipwrecked By Spellcheck

WFAA’s Brett Shipp of NEWS 8 INVESTIGATES in Dallas reports that local high school hoops star and Mizzou top recruit Tony Mitchell will probably lose his scholarship - and not graduate from high school - thanks to attending a dubious school his junior year.

Tony Mitchell

Center of Life Academy is a private school accredited by a home schooling association that is not recognized by DISD.

Sources tell News 8 that 14 of the high school credits Mitchell brought with him from the Miami school were not transferable at Pinkston High School.  But last November, Principal Norma Villegas let Mitchell quickly make up the credits.

Tony Mitchell

Sources said he took the equivalent of nine course make-up exams in two days  —  five of them over a two-hour period.

Mitchell passed every test, and — in just a matter of hours — went from being a freshman at Pinkston to qualifying as a senior.

One of WFAA’s primary ways of discrediting the “Center of Life” Miami high school was to display spelling errors from a website that apparently represents the institution. While I couldn’t find the URL myself, I did locate a primitive web presence promoting the basketball team. Read more…

Proudly Presenting Nick Saban’s Favorite Website

Last week Gentry Estes of the MOBILE PRESS-REGISTER has the latest installment of Alabama Coach Nick Saban forcing an underperforming though eligible player off his team to make room for a better prospect.

Nick Saban Oversigning.com

Alabama coach Nick Saban has confirmed this morning’s earlier news that sophomore reserve quarterback Star Jackson plans to leave the Crimson Tide in pursuit of a transfer to another school.

Saban had this to say before tonight’s Crimson Caravan stop in Mobile …

“Star Jackson has done a fantastic job in our program, made a tremendous amount of improvement. We hate to see any player leave the program, but quarterback’s kind of a unique position where one guy can play, and we have a lot of competition there right now. Greg’s the starter coming back, AJ has done a fantastic job of improving, Phillip Sims came in at mid-semester and showed a lot of promise this spring.

“Star has made a tremendous amount of improvement and done a very, very good job. But I think sometimes when quarterbacks can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel in terms of when they might be able to play, they get a little antsy and might want to go someplace else. Star and I have discussed it, and we’re going to help him do what he feels is going to make him and his family the best decision for his future.”

A native of Lake Worth, Fla., and former Super 11 quarterback recruit, Jackson saw action in five games last season as a redshirt freshman for Alabama, completing 13 of 18 throws for 116 yards. He is now likely headed to an NCAA FCS or Division II program, his high school coach told the Press-Register earlier today.

Attempts to reach Jackson have been unsuccessful.

If player “transfers” like this didn’t happen all that often in Saban-coached programs, I guess you could accept the coach’s comments at face value. But Saban is notorious for oversigning recruiting classes and then cutting eligible players under the ol’ “transfer” pretense.

Saban is far from alone in the practice, which has gotten so out of control that a website called Oversigning.com (via Da Wiz) was launched earlier this year to track coaches who brazenly game so-called scholarship limits.

The most recent example of a coach misrepresenting the departure of a scholarship player is Missouri basketball coach Mike Anderson. The ASSOCIATED PRESS has a scathing report on Anderson’s abuse of the truth in announcing the departure of sophomore forward Tyler Stone: Read more…

Report: Big 10 Officially Extends Mizzou An Offer

Longtime Kansas City radio and television personality Kevin Kietzman, citing “multiple sources,” reported today that the Big Ten has officially extended an invitation to Missouri to join the conference.

Report: Missour to join Big 10

The WHB-AM afternoon talk show host also reported that Nebraska, Notre Dame and Rutgers have been offered spots in the league.

On Missouri, Kietzman has specific details:

In order for the University of Missouri to join the Big Ten, the Missouri Board of Regents will still have to approve the move. Sources close to the governing body say the Big Ten has told officials that Mizzou could add $1.3 million per month in revenue to the lucrative Big Ten Television Network.

Big Ten representatives have also told Missouri officials they would like to have the entire expansion process wrapped up this summer with a formal announcement coming no later than July. Read more…

Catches Of The Day: Riley Cooper, Jerrell Jackson

Earlier today I posted video of Jerrell Jackson’s incredible one-hand snatch against Colorado. Just a few minutes later, Riley Cooper also made an improbably single-handed grab for a touchdown against Georgia.

(Jerell Jackson and Riley Cooper: Spectacular)

There’s no doubt that Jackson made the better catch. The angle that he caught the ball was such that there’s very few guys out there with the hand strength to make that grab.

Who made the better catch?

That’s not to discount Cooper’s catch, but the point is, there’s a lot more guys who could’ve converted Cooper’s completion compared to what Jackson’s, which was something out of Cirque de Soleil. Jackson’s played looked like it was out of one of those some recent NFL commercials that were faked via special effects.

Catch Of The Year: Mizzou WR’s 1-Hand “Snatch”

UPDATE: Florida’s Riley Cooper also made a jaw-jacking grab in the UF-UGA tilt. I matched up videos of both catches today for you to decide (vote on) which was better. I still say Jackson’s (below) was the superior haul.

Missouri’s Jerrell Jackson is your leader in the clubhouse for college football’s catch of the year.
