Guy Takes Ball To Groin - In The Name of Science

SPORTS COLUMN serves up video of a guy taking a 50 m.p.h. tennis ball to the groin - all in the name of science!

The clip comes from the Fox Sports show “Sport Science”. Apparently, the experiment was to determine how the anticipation & pain of getting hit in the nads affects the heart rate. (Surprisingly, it goes up.)

This tennis ball test to the testes also presents additional scientific benefits - such as giving folks something to watch now that “Jackass” is off the air.

Report: Chargers’ Kaeding Kicked w/Cracked Leg

Nate Kaeding Kicks With Broken Leg

It appears the Chargers like to keep their boo-boos secret. After Philip Rivers admitted to playing against the Patriots without an ACL, the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE learns that kicker Nate Kaeding was booting field goals with a broken leg.

A person “familiar with the situation” said that Kaeding’s lower left leg was injured back on Dec. 24 against the Broncos, yet the kicker continued to play in San Diego’s last 5 games. Even with a fractured plant leg, Kaeding scored all 12 of the Chargers’ points in the AFC Championship Game.

The team had claimed that Kaeding’s injury was only a ‘bruise’, while also declaring Rivers’ torn ACL as just a ’sprained MCL’. But you have to admire Nate’s bravado in soldiering on despite the broken limb.

You Can Pry $40M From Shaq’s Cold, Dead Hips

Shaquille O'Neal

Shaq Diesel may be in the shop for repairs, but he says he’s not ready for the junkyard just yet.

The MIAMI HERALD reports that O’Neal has brushed off talk that he should retire. The 35-year-old Heat center has been recently sidelined with a hip injury, but he’s not hip to calling it quits, saying he plans to fulfill the final two years of his contract: “I am the son of an army drill sergeant, and when we enlist, we go full term.”

It’s hard to walk (or limp) away from a deal that nets you $40 million over the next two seasons, especially when there’s pricey on-demand porn to watch.

But as his body and stats suffer, O’Neal offers this strange quote about his offensive output: “Whenever my numbers have (declined), it hasn’t been because of humans. It has been (because of) freak injuries.”

A freak is someone who continues to pay to watch the Heat play at the AAA this season, not a chronically arthritic hip.

Marathoner: “I Can Live a Good Life Without Toes”

We told you it was cold in Wisconsin last weekend - so cold it turns out, that an Iowa runner is about to lose some body parts.

Otter Pops

The ASSOCIATED PRESS has the chilling news that 27-year-old Andrew Wells fell victim to frostbite during a day-long run in the Frozen Otter Ultra Trek. As a result, he’ll have to have some appendages amputated.

Despite temperatures dipping to 15 below zero, Andrew was the only runner to reach the 40-mile checkpoint. In fact, he got turned around and ended up back at the starting line - spending almost 17 hours outside in freezing conditions. Sadly, his icy victory came at a price.

Chargers Say LT’s Knee Was A-OK; LT Says WTF?

Was LaDanian Tomlinson really hurt? Or was he afraid to get pummeled by the Pats?

LaDainian Tomlinson Patriots

During Sunday’s game, LT left in the 1st quarter after aggravating his sore knee. But by the 2nd quarter, the Chargers had sent word to the Gillette Stadium press box that Tomlinson “can return”.

Which was news to LaDainian. He argued, “It’s obvious that I couldn’t play. If I could have played, I would have been in there.” And coach Norv Turner defended his running back after the game, telling reporters, “The doctors and trainers said he couldn’t go.”

So, who’s telling the truth here?

Tom Brady’s Injury Status: Like Night And Day

Your leading source for football injuries, TMZ.com, last night had video of Tom Brady in a boot as he went to visit his girlfriend Gisele Bundchen in New York.

Tom Brady

Today, the site update’s Brady’s look, revealing that the Pats QB had the boot off for his dinner date last night.

Either Brady’s condition improved in a matter of hours or Bundchen has developed a serious foot fetish. Or for Brady’s sake, both.

What’s This All A Boot? Tom Brady Spotted In Cast

PAGE SIX gets a leg up on Tom Brady, as they spot the New England star in a cast. Strange, since you’d think it would’ve been the other QB on the Foxboro field that would have had the more pressing need for one.

The Pats signal caller was caught outside girlfriend Gisele Bundchen’s Big Apple apartment on Monday, and his stylish faded jeans couldn’t hide the fact that his right foot wasn’t concealed in an ordinary sneaker.

When asked about the apparently injury during an appearance on WEEI radio, Brady calmly responded, “Ah, you know, there’s always bumps and bruises….It’s nothing serious.” Not surprisingly, the Patriots had no comment about their MVP’s situation.

How does Brady really feel about wearing a walking cast?

Right ACL of San Diego QB Rivers ‘Totally Gone’

Playing with a hurt knee during Sunday’s loss to the Patriots, Philip Rivers showed he had a lot of guts. But what the Chargers QB didn’t have was a working ACL.

Philip Rivers injured

The SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE scopes out news that the anterior cruciate ligament in the San Diego signal caller’s right knee is “totally gone,” and he’ll have to undergo reconstructive surgery. Although his recovery time is unknown, the Chargers QB expects to be 100% healthy before the start of next season.

Rivers played the entire game with a missing ACL, but didn’t come clean about his true injury until Monday, earlier saying it was just a ’sprained MCL’.

Well, if Bill Belichick can be so secretive about his players’ bumps and bruises, why not San Diego?

Marbury To Have Surgery; Nix On Knicks Career?

The NEW YORK TIMES reports that Stephon Marbury will have ankle surgery next week, and the sour Knicks start will be out indefinitely.

Stephon Marbury Isiah Thomas shake hands

(So long, sucker! [Applicable to either Isiah or Stephon])

Sidelined since Saturday, Marbury probably has suited up at MSG for the last time. He’s been irked at and irksome with Isiah Thomas throughout most of the season. And Thursday’s announcement means Stephon can’t collect any frequent flyer miles for taking off from the team in mid-tour.

Not that his teammates will necessarily miss him. Since Starbury’s scratch, the Knicks have been on a three-game winning streak.

And we thought it was because of rumors of Isiah’s imminent exit.

Injured Oden Pining To Be Part Of Portland’s Wins

Greg Oden is glad the Portland Blazers are doing so well this season. He just wishes he was in on the fun.

(Where’s Waldo?: The Greg Oden Edition)

(Hint: He’s not suited up.)

The ASSOCIATED PRESS reports that the NBA’s #1 pick is disappointed he’s not taking part in his team’s blazing play, as they’ve won 18 of their last 21 games.

I would just like to be out there to be able to say, ‘You know what, I’m out here, I’m working hard and I’m helping these guys win.’

Despite sitting out his rookie season with a knee injury, Oden says he’s already learned a lot just by being on the NBA sidelines:

It’s really helping me with my confidence. Just being able to watch these guys play, see them play and see them miss shots. When you watch them on TV, you’d think they never miss. Just being around the guys night in and night out, you just feel more comfortable that when I come in next year, I’m going to be ready to play against them.”

The Blazers could have used his confidence - and the rest of him - on Wednesday night, as Portland lost to the Celtics, 100-90.
