After finishing second, third, third, and fourth in the last four ice dancing world championships, the United States’ Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto sat in great position in Los Angeles Friday night after a stunning free dance routine. Would that be enough for their first world gold?

No, for the Russians pulled their own miniature Miracle on Ice and stole gold on their final routine, leaving Belbin and Agosto flabbergasted. The charming Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin pleased the judges with their collection of ice skating parlor tricks and left the thematically tight Americans jabbing about the loss of romance in ice dancing.
Of course, it’s not much of a miracle if the Russians win the medal more than anyone else historically, but that’s frozen water under the bridge now. Read more…
