Harry Oliver R.I.P.; Game-Winning Kick Still Haunts Michigan Fans

LATE HARRY O’S BLOW WROUGHT UNTOLD WOE TO WOLVES: On Saturday, September 20, 1980, we were cramped into the family car, heading to a 5pm Saturday church service in Kansas City. My Dad, a graduate of Notre Dame, had the radio on, tuning toward the fade-n-out of Notre Dame football announcer Tony Roberts.

As we pulled into the Cure of Ars parking lot, we paused. ND kicker Harry Oliver was lining up a quarter-mile kick (actually 51 yards) to beat Michigan that day - after another impossible Joe Montana-led (Blair Kiel?) Irish comeback. If you don’t know what happened after that, enjoy Michigan announcer Bob Ufer’s tortured tale of Harry O.-woe.

We weren’t aware of Ufer’s account of the moment until we heard of Oliver’s sad passing. And we don’t know what was more memorable, Ufer still being upright after three fingers of Cutty in the booth before the boot, or his getting the score wrong three times afterwards.Oliver, who lost a battle with cancer last week, had this sadly prophetic comment to IRISH SPORTS REPORT in 2004: “It’s probably what’s going to go on my tombstone instead of when I was born or when I died. It’s going to be ‘September 20, 1980. Notre Dame 29, Michigan 27.’

At least he got the score right.
