SEAN TAYLOR DIES FROM GUN WOUNDS IN HOME INVASION: The MIAMI HERALD reports that Sean Taylor has died:
The Redskins safety passed away early Tuesday morning at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Hours of surgery couldn’t save Taylor, after he suffered massive blood loss from a gunshot wound to the groin. There was a slight chance of hope for Taylor’s recovery, when the player awoke from a coma Monday evening, and responded to a doctor’s request by squeezing his hand.
The gunman who shot Taylor at his Palmetto Bay home still remains at large.
EX-BAMA RB LOSES WIFE & 4 CHILDREN IN CAR ACCIDENT: EVERY DAY SHOULD BE SATURDAY has the very sad news of former Alabama running back Siran Stacy losing his wife and four children in an auto accident late Monday night:
The van carrying the Stacy family was struck by a truck going the wrong way on U.S. Highway 84. Police and witnesses say the pickup driven by 29-year-old Adam Wayman was heading west on the eastbound lanes before smashing into the passenger’s side of the van.Wife Ellen and children Lequisa, Sidney, Bronson and Ellie all died in the crash. Siran is at Flowers Hospital in Dothan in guarded condition. And 4-year-old daughter Shelly was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, where she remains in serious condition.
The DOTHAN EAGLE reports that alcohol was likely a factor in the fatal crash. Pickup driver Wayman was taken to Flowers Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
CINCY’S JOE NUXHALL ROUNDS THIRD AND REACHES HOME: Sad day today in Cincinnati, where Porkopolis’ favorite son, Joe Nuxhall, passed last night at 79. Nuxsie, who was the youngest player in major league history after making his debut with the Reds at
16 15(!), had been battling cancer for some time.
Most Southern Ohioans and Northern Kentuckians knew him as a longtime Reds announcer, part of the “Marty and Joe” team (with Hall of Famer Marty Brennaman) that called Reds games for over 30 years. Here’s SbB Girl Colene and the Joe Nuxhall statue outside of Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati:
Usually it’s a sad day when someone dies, but anybody who knew Joe understands that if anyone got the most out of life it was him. He’ll be missed - especially in the press box.
DE LA HOYA LOOKING FOR A FIGHT IN DODGER STADIUM: Oscar De La Hoya wants a chance to show what he’s got to fans in Dodger Stadium - not out in the field, but in the ring:
The LOS ANGELES TIMES reports that the boxer and East L.A. native is looking to hold a match in the ballpark, possibly in May against British belter Ricky Hatton.Oscar explains his zest for the match: “The Dodgers are the team in L.A., it’s history in the making.”
Interestingly, De La Hoya admitted he’s only been to one game at the park, and that was several years ago. Hope he doesn’t get confused with the new parking directions.
Oscar also hopes the event turns out better than the last (and so far only) boxing match held in Chavez Ravine. In 1963, Davey Moore fell backward in his fight against Sugar Ramos, striking his neck on the bottom rope. Moore died a few days later from a brain stem injury.Bob Dylan even wrote a song about the fateful fight. Maybe Oscar can get Sugar Ray or Five For Fighting to pen a ballad about his bout.
Yet, De La Hoya hasn’t actually asked the Dodgers about using their field for the fight. A team spokesperson said, “It’s something we’d be happy to discuss with them if they give us a call.”
Based on his recent choice of wardrobe, Oscar’s sure to sell tons of tickets to the WeHo crowd.
MLB GMs WANT HELMETS ON BASE COACHES NEXT SEASON: Although their support of instant replay might fall on deaf ears, baseball GMs should have a better chance with their proposal of base coaches wearing helmets:
The ASSOCIATED PRESS reports that general managers have agreed that all first- and third-base coaches must have additional head protection for next season. The decision comes four months after Mike Coolbaugh, a first-base coach for the minor league Tulsa Drillers, was killed by a line drive during a game.
The GMs will decide what exactly safety measures they’ll enforce when they meet next month. Unlike the instant replay vote, MLB VP Joe Garagiola Jr. said the agreed-upon requirements will not need additional approval from the owners or Bud Selig.
SO JOUMANA (ALLEGEDLY) WANTS TO BURY THE HATCHET? We all remember the rather contentious divorce proceeding of Jason Kidd and his former wife Joumana.
We haven’t heard much about the aftermath of the settlement, but no one can accuse (and we certainly aren’t) Joumana of not trying to get on with her life by burying the hatchet over the matter.
WIKIPEDIA ENTRY REPORTS DANIELLE GAMBA DECEASED: Based on the less-than-reliable Wikipedia.org, Danielle Gamba (the former Raiders cheerleader turned nude model) in the past month has been married to Nick Swisher (top screenshot - from Google cache Feb. 17), and died on Friday (screenshot of 2/25/06 Wikipedia entry):
On Feb. 26, Gamba’s Wikipedia entry was completely erased except for this entry (2/26/07, 1AM ET) (screenshot below if entry erased in meantime):
I’ve got zero confirmation on any of this news. None of it has been reported anywhere, be it main media or blogs. It very well could all be a hoax.
