8:00 PM CSN Baltimore has video of Marcus Smith, a U.S. soldier who dressed as a minor league umpire to surprise his children at a Bowie Baysox game with a home visit from Afghanistan.
7:45 PM A Japanese Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was swept out to sea during last year's tsunami washed up on a shore in British Columbia last month. The bike's owner asked that the motorcycle be displayed at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee as a memorial to the tsunami victims.
7:30 PM Buffalo Bills receiver David Clowneytweeted the results of his HIV test which came back negative. And to the critics of his decision to share his results, Clowney added: "Some people are Ridiculously stupid ... And can't see the bigger picture about things that are important in this world."
Michael David Smith of AOL Fanhouse watched Dana Jacobson’s return to ESPN’s morning show “First Take” and reports that she seemed slightly miffed at how her rant was reported. With the emphasis on slightly.
“I want to once again say how truly sorry I am for my poor choices and bad judgment,” Jacobson said. “I’ve taken responsibility for what I did say and do, and realize it was wrong. … I have already learned a lot.”
Although Jacobson didn’t get into the details of what she said at the roast, the way she emphasized the words “what I did say” seemed to be a subtle suggestion that some of the reports that have come out in the past two weeks overstated exactly what Jacobson said.Read more…
Even in a flag football game against a college team, the Miami Dolphins can’t win.
The MIAMI HERALD reports on the last football game held at the Orange Bowl - a 7-on-7 flag football contest on Saturday between former Dolphins and former Miami Hurricanes. The ex-Canes were able to run away from the ex-Fins in a 65-51 shootout. Too bad the current stock of UM players couldn’t have done the same thing in their own home finale.
Over 12,000 fans showed up for the final football farewell to the stadium - more than the Marlins can even hope to bring out to their games. But folks are invited to come back to the OB in two weeks and pick up a urinal or two.
We’ve heard ESPN has completely yanked all coverage of the Dana Jacobson story. Bristol has also begun directing ESPN-owned radio stations to stop mentioning Jacobson on-air and remove Jacobson-related material from its websites.
Think the Jacobson photos coming out today had something to do with that?
We thought it was a little bizarre how much ESPN covered the story in the first place. A fraction of ESPN’s audience was even aware of the roast, yet the net covered it on SportsCenter, ESPN.com and ESPN Radio like it was one of the week’s lead stories (it shouldn’t have been). We think the net’s suits were probably using the story to promote that god-awful ESPN radio morning debacle which shall go unnamed.
But when the photos (and soon, video?) came out, things started getting really messy.
It’s one thing to get out ahead of a story or accusation (see Randy Moss). It’s another to overblow the story by constantly reminding people about it.
The HARTFORD COURANT reports (sans byline) on the “dozen protesters” who “marched in front of ESPN headquarters in Bristol today, calling for the firing of on-air personality Dana Jacobson for comments she made at a recent roast.”
The jobless protesters, most from local houses of worship, carried snazzy signs that read “ESPN , Say No to Hate Speech,” and “Fairness in the Media.”
The protestors featured dynamic souls like Reverend Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition. Or was it the Christian Defense League. Or Commission. We’re not really sure.
Mahoney highlighted the excitement on the ESPN campus, by summing up what we’ve been thinking on this from the outset: This is all about the Jews, Blacks and homosexuals (of course!). Read more…
Do you really think there would be this uproar if ESPN hadn’t made the questionable decision to report Jacobson’s suspension and apology for 48 consecutive hours on all network platforms? If Bob Ley had done the same thing, think the boys in Bristol would’ve piled on like that?
The CHICAGO TRIBUNE, via THE BIG LEAD, reports today “Sources have confirmed that (Dana) Jacobson, a co-host of ‘First Take’ on ESPN2, currently is serving a one-week suspension because of her behavior at a Jan. 11 roast for ESPN Radio personalities Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic at Atlantic City, N.J.
“While declining to confirm Jacobson had been suspended, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said, ‘Her actions and comments were inappropriate and we’ve dealt with it.‘”
Dealt with it how? By getting her better material? That was the only problem we had with her alleged comments, which were, though foul, somewhat less than original.
AWFUL ANNOUNCING blesses us with news that the future Belvedere Vodka spokeswoman emailed an apology after being pressured by theCatholic League. During her brief time on the M&M podium, the inebriated Jacobson went on a tirade, yelling “F— Notre Dame” and “F— Touchdown Jesus“, before closing with, “F— Jesus!”
Dana’s follow-up statement said, “My remarks about Notre Dame were foolish and insensitive. I respect all religions and did not mean anything derogatory by my poorly chosen words.”
