Kurt Rambis Hired As New Timberwolves Coach

Kids these days. The newer generations of NBA fans probably only know Kevin McHale, if they know him at all, as either the general manager/coach who spent the past few years running the Minnesota Timberwolves into the ground before being shown the door in June. Older fans, however, probably remember McHale best as the Celtics forward who clotheslined the bespectacled, bemulleted Lakers forward Kurt Rambis in the 1984 NBA Finals.

Kevin McHale Kurt Rambis

Now, 25 years later, REVENGE! Rambis has been hired away from the Lakers to replaceĀ  the deposed McHale as the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Sadly, it appears that the 80s mullet and black specs were casualties of his quest for revenge and were left somewhere on the Boston Garden floor.

Urban Meyer: I’m Not Going To Notre Dame. Ever.

Imagine for a moment that you are the CEO of a major corporation - the leader in its industry (widgets, likely). You live in a subtropical climate, close to two major bodies of water and attendant beaches. You have the adulation of your employees and your community. You make millions of dollars per year in salary. Hot wife, good kids, the world is truly your playground.

Urban Meyer Touchdown Jesus

(Hey you - yeah, you. Shut up.)

Now imagine that an older, once-proud company in the Rust Belt came calling, asking you to take it over. It used to be an industry leader many decades ago but is now a shell of its former self. It’s been run into the ground by poor management despite its brand recognition. Think of, say, Chrysler. You’d have to take a pay cut, live in a crappy part of the country, and your employers would be bitter, hateful people who would blame you the first moment something went wrong. You’d tell them to shove it and you know it. Just like Urban Meyer did to Notre Dame.

Leach Flies To Seattle To Interview For UW Job?

For a team that is likely to go 0-12 after this weekend’s obligatory loss to California, there sure are a lot of people interested in coaching at the University of Washington.

Mike Leach

Mike Leach, who was just named Big 12 Coach of the Year, was reportedly on a commercial flight to Seattle yesterday (way to cut costs, there, UW). Fresno State’s Pat Hill has been mentioned as a candidate. And Jim Mora, Jr., who created a stir two years ago when he openly pined for the UW job when he was still employed by the Falcons, is perhaps considered the front runner. Leach’s trip yesterday is maybe the strangest, considering these kinds of trips are usually made on private planes so as not to arouse suspicion.

Does Syracuse Want Lane Kiffin To Be Carroll 2.0?

When it comes to hiring football coaches, Syracuse AD Darryl Gross has a checkered track record. Yes, he was the person who ultimately brought Pete Carroll to USC when he was the Associate Athletic Director, single-handedly revitalizing a crumbling program. The head coach most responsible for driving the Trojans to the brink of total collapse? Paul Hackett, also a Darryl Gross-led hire.

Lane Kiffin and Otto the Orange

So if you’re an Orangemen fan, you have the right to be skeptical about Gross’ decision-making, especially as his hire at your school, Greg Robinson, has taken the program from mediocre to pitiful. So squeamish Syracuse fans might want to avert their eyes when I tell you who the POST-STANDARD is reporting Gross might be targeting as your next head coach: Lane Kiffin. Yes, the guy whose job status with the Oakland Raiders is about as tenuous as a banker with Lehman Brothers.
