There have been plenty of messy divorces between star players and team front offices across the NFL in recent years. Think about it: Terrell Owens and the 49ers, Willis Magahee and the Bills, Terrell Owens and the Eagles, Randy Moss and the Vikings, Keyshawn Johnson and the Buccaneers, Terrell Owens and his sanity, Randy Moss and the Raiders, Terrell Owens and his PR agent and, well, you get the point. It’s possible that none of those splits have been as messy or acrimonious as the one between all-everything defensive end Jared Allen and the Kansas City Chiefs, whose general manager, Carl Peterson, resigned amidst a dismal season on Monday. Well, Allen wasted no time in attacking his former employer, claiming that Peterson’s own bad karma had finally come back to haunt him during an appearance on The Monty Show on SPORTING NEWS RADIO. You can check out the audio right here: Jared Allen Attacks Carl Peterson

(Evidently Allen was channeling KANSAS CITY SPORTS.)

In case you didn’t catch all of that, here’s exactly what Allen said about Peterson:

Tim Montemayor: “What are your thoughts about Carl Peterson leaving the Chiefs organization?”
Jared Allen: “(laughing) Later!”
TM: “Come on, is there no love loss there?”
JA: “Absolutely not, you know what I’m saying? I believe in karma. Good things happen to good people. I’ll leave it at that.”

Ouch. Oh, but he didn’t stop there. It turns out Mr. Allen had plenty to get off his chest.

I live in L.A. now and don’t spend much time in KC anymore, but I just happen to be in town today, and I can tell you that sports fans will be celebrating Peterson’s demise here for some time.

In the NFC North, a division that no one apparently wants to win - none of the 4 teams are currently over .500 - all it’s going to take is an ill-timed injury or a key trade to make the difference between a team watching the playoffs from home and getting knocked out by their first round opponent. Which is why when the Packers heard that Tony Gonzalez wasn’t too happy playing for the rebuilding Chiefs, they made them an offer. And the Chiefs accepted.

(He’s not exactly smiling now)

But things didn’t turn out so great for the fans who don the hats of cheese. Even though the Packers “sent the papers and everything, thinking it was going to happen”, the Chiefs pulled the ol’ “Why don’t you give us more than we agreed to” routine with about 10 minutes to go before the deadline was over. The Packers did not.

Chiefs fans: I hope you enjoyed last week’s game against the Panthers. Actually, I’m pretty sure you didn’t since it was a 34-0 loss. But it also was not only the game where Tony Gonzalez broke Shannon Sharpe’s record for receiving yards by an NFL tight end, but it also might be his last game with Kansas City. The KANSAS CITY STAR reports that Gonzalez has asked the team to explore the possibility of a trade to a contender before Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Teams who have expressed interest include the New York Giants, Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers. But so far only the Giants have apparently only made an offer of a sixth-round pick, while the Chiefs are asking for a third-rounder. As Jay Glazer notes on FOX SPORTS, that sounds like a deal when compared to the second and fifth-round picks the Giants got for Jeremy Shockey in the offseason.

People of Kansas City: in the future, please make sure that you fully chew your ribs before swallowing, because Tony Gonzalez might not be there to save you. The future Hall of Famer told Adam Schefter of THE NFL NETWORK that he’d be willing to consider a trade to a Super Bowl contender at some point down the road. This came as news to the Chiefs official who told THE NFL NETWORK he couldn’t see that happening.

Although Gonzalez has been a Chief his whole career, and is as much the face of their franchise as anyone in pro sports, this season has shown that anyone can wind up playing anywhere under the right circumstances. And while Gonzalez isn’t asking for a trade, he doesn’t sound that opposed to the idea of playing for another team:

(We now join a Nationals Radio Broadcast, already in progress)

That means the Nats have the “unusual distinction of being a team that has far more people watching its games in person (average attendance has been 29,990 per game) than listening to them on radio.”

The scary part? Farhi writes that the owner of the radio stations broadcasting the games says the ratings numbers are probably a little high:

Bonneville Int’l VP/News & Programming Jim Farley, whose company owns the stations, conceded that the “actual radio audience for the Nationals is ‘probably lower’ than the average reported by Arbitron.”

Farley added, “There’s no storyline for this season. Who’s the hero? Who’s the big star? Even the (famously terrible) ‘62 Mets had Marv Throneberry. The Nats don’t have a character like that.”

The Nats don’t have a character? Apparently Mr. Farley is unaware of Lastings Milledge’s Myspace page.

(Great hed from WaPo - had to cap it)

The worst part of all of this is that Slowes and Jageler are being associated with those stinkbomb numbers. I worked as a MLB and minor league radio announcer for nearly ten years, and I can tell you that the contract status of broadcasters is often (inexplicably) tied to the success of the team.

I know of two cases in which the jobs of baseball announcers were probably saved by their team winning the World Series. One was the 2002 Angels, which featured the duo of Rory Markas and Terry Smith. Both are good guys (I worked with Terry on AAA Columbus broadcasts have met Rory a couple times), but were hired by the Disney regime. Rory and Terry had barely been on the job when Arte Moreno bought the club and as we all know, it isn’t uncommon for new ownership to come in and clean house.

But when the Angels won the Series, Rory and Terry were forever tied to that championship. Both remain with the club to this day. I’m not saying they definitely would’ve been let go when Disney sold the club, but from what I heard at the time, it was a possibility.

Another example was the ‘96 Yankees. I was working in the organization at the time as one of the club’s announcers for the AAA Columbus Clippers. There were rumblings around that time that John Sterling’s job status was less than rock-solid. But just as Sterling’s slippage was starting to be whispered about in broadcast circles, the Yankees won the ‘96 Series - and then began their championship run. And now Sterling is a Yankee for life.

(John Sterling, still a Yankees employee. Just be sure to not get behind him in the dessert line.)

I’m not saying any of the aforementioned deserved the pipe. I’m merely pointing out how the radio and TV broadcast biz really works. Besides a precious few, there’s no untouchables.

Today I’m starting a regular feature. Spotlighting the hottest sports ticket of the day.

For that, I’ve turned to the ultimate inside source, the largest ticker broker on the west coast, My Boy Barry: “The Dodgers disembark in D.C. to face off against the Nationals. With Manny Ramirez coming to town, maybe Nats fans will finally show up at their spiffy new ballpark for once. Also tonight, the Red Sox & Yankees renew their rivalry in the Bronx, much to ESPN’s relief. And Toronto hopes that Roy Halladay can sway the Jays to victor-ay over the Rays. Oy vey!”

When I heard about Jenna Jameson’s “shock” over being pregnant, this is all I could think about (real media file).

Scarface fans know where I’m going with this. Listen to the end of the clip if you can’t figure it out.

It’s 38 years and counting since the Kansas City Chiefs’ last Super Bowl appearance, but team tryant (and President & GM) Carl Peterson , who the ASSOCIATED PRESS reports has rehired himself for a 20th season, assures us Chiefs fans that “We know where we’re going and what we’re going to do.”

What Peterson is “going to do” is bring back a <strike>personal caddy</strike> coach in Herman Edwards who oversaw the Chiefs go 0-9 to finish the season. But at least Edwards has his popularity with the fans to fall back on, not to mention an explosive offense which scored two touchdowns over that nine-game span exactly once.

More of Peterson’s politburo-speak, as he continues to buffalo the Hunt family: “We have a plan and it’s being implemented. I have no intention to leave before the job is finished.”

Dear Clark Hunt,

The now-20-year-purveyor of the 5-year-plan is not going to make it easy for you. Before fed-up fans storm the owner’s suite with pitchforks and torches, drop your silver spoon for one darned moment and get your lovely, dishwater-safe hands dirty.
