WHAT PLANET IS HE FROM? It’s not Bruins coach Ben Howland, but actor John Lithgow, who seems exuberant in the fact that UCLA is finishing off a win over rival USC in a basketball game at Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday.
The real connection for the Harvard grad who once shared a dorm room with Al Gore and Tommy Lee Jones is that his current wife, Mary Yeager, is
a faculty member of the history department.
And, apparently, Lithgow is also part of some UCLA trivia, far too trivial for even us to note here.

The PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE reports that Adidas shoe guru Sonny Vaccaro "helped buy and sell" Ben Howland from Pitt to UCLA.
One of Finder’s sources indicated that Vaccaro had planned to sneak Howland from the Steel City to SoCal since March 2002 and quoted Vaccaro as saying, "I’m going to get Ben Howland the UCLA job."
Why did Sonny care?
The LOS ANGELES TIMES reports Vaccaro recently said, "with UCLA, we haven’t received a return on our investment lately." Adidas has a $19 million shoe and apparel pact with UCLA.

BEN’S BIT: Ben Howland asked on ESPN Radio this week how his UCLA squad would do against a John Wooden-team from yesteryear: "They’d drill us."

Don Barrett of LARadio.com records a couple Los Angeles-area radio rants.
From KROQ-AM’s "Doc on the Roq": "Activists say that a human should not be a mascot at San Diego State. The animal activists think that’s exploitive to animals, so what are we left with? Inanimate objects. As far as I know, they don’t have a spokesperson."
From Rich Perelman of the O.C.’s KPLS-AM: "Engineers for XTRA 1150 are facing a challenge for UCLA home games trying NOT to pick up salty comments by super-intense Bruin coach Ben Howland from the sidelines."

I’ve cracked the ghoulish case about the folks at the UCLA Cadaver Center illegally selling body parts.
Turns out Bruins Basketball Coach Ben Howland and UCLA Football Coach Karl Dorrell had a desperate need for around a hundred hearts.

Michael Wilbon howls about Ben Howland on ESPN’s "Sports Reporters": "From the too little too late department, we bring you Ben Howland who’s planning to say goodbye to his Pitt basketball players about a week after they heard it from an assistant coach and every sports show in America. … These coaches talk character, but exhibit none."
