The NHL reminds more and more of an abandoned fantasy team; any points they score are just out of blind luck. Take for instance the legal action enacted by Gary Bettman & Co. late yesterday.
The league has gone to the courts to request the right to discipline the owners of the New York Rangers, the Dolan-run MSG group, after MSG sued the league for trying to limit the team’s attempts to run a website and engage in marketing and promotional endeavors independent of the NHL.
In the NHL’s newest legal manuever, the league is threatening to terminate MSG’s ownership of the team, which could mean that the world’s most famous arena would no longer host Rangers games.
Damn, just when the NHL had a chance to get back in the public eye, NEWSDAY has to go and screw things up.
Saturday the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS reported that “Rangers hockey star Sean Avery’s name and private cell phone number are in the little black book of Manhattan madam Kristin Davis.” Read more…
In January, we reported how it was possible that the final event at Yankee Stadium wouldn’t be a baseball game but an outdoor hockey contest. And now the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS follows up that such a dream is coming closer to reality.
After the Yankees clear out & move to a brand-new stadium across the street, the plan is for the New York Rangers to close down the 85-year-old ballpark with an outdoor game. Read more…
The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS reports that momentum is building for an NHL game to be played at Yankee Stadium next winter, which would likely be the final event held at the ballpark before the Yanks move across the street to their new digs in 2009.
All indications are that the Yankees are intrigued by the idea, no doubt spurred on by the big success in Buffalo on New Year’s Day, and have reportedly met with NHL officials about the possibility.
But now the question is, which two of the three New York-area teams would play in the game?
NY RANGERS’ AVERY ANGRY OVER BUDDHA BAR BOUNCING: Even while on the injured list, New York Rangers ruffian Sean Avery still remains his personable, polite self:
The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS spotted the blue-tongued bully and his fellow Blueshirts out celebrating at the Bungalow 8 bar Saturday night after vetoing the Ottawa Senators.
Avery “showed up with a sling on one hand and black nail polish on the other.” He must have gotten into a pre-night fight with his manicurist.
But the Bungalow wasn’t the guys’ first choice for fun. Beforehand, the crew were banned by the bouncer from busting into the Buddha Bar. Avery took the rejection in stride, yellining, “F— this place! We’re never coming here again!”
The Buddha bouncer reportedly told the teammates that he didn’t know or care who they were. Such as it is when your league is broadcast on Versus.
The NEW YORK POST skates over the news that the Rangers winger denies making pre-game comments about a Maple Leafs player suffering from cancer.
Howard Berger of The FAN 590 reported that during warmups, Avery made remarks about Jason Blake’s battle with leukemia. Leafs teammate Darcy Tucker didn’t appreciate the words, and went after Avery. The two were separated but later fought it out in the 1st period.
