In the wake of the NHL sending the Penguins and the Sabres outside for the Winter Classic recently, the DENVER POST reports the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets will take each other on in an outdoor NBA game on October 10th.
The game will be played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California. and the Suns will be the team bringing in a court, scoreboard, and monitors to pull this off.
Obviously, when you think of playing basketball outdoors, you probably are more likely to think of blacktop than a tennis court, and while it’s in California, there still could be weather issues to deal with. Nuggets center Marcus Camby appears to be looking forward to it, if only a little bit:
“I don’t think I’ve played outdoor basketball since high school. I’ve seen hockey do it, a couple times in the last couple years, play outdoor hockey games. But an outdoor basketball game would definitely be different. I’m anxious to see how that plays out and stuff like that. Sounds like it would be a whole lot of fun. I hope the weather’s nice. I hope it’s not a chilly day when we play out there.”
Outdoor games aren’t completely new territory for the Suns franchise, as they played the first outdoor game in Puerto Rico back in 1972, beating a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-led Milwaukee Bucks team, 116-103, at a baseball stadium in San Juan.
I hope it isn’t too windy — occasionally you wonder if Steve Nash would get knocked over by a good, stiff breeze.
