Stanley Cup’s Trip To Sweden Is A Blessed Event

With seven Swedes on the champion Red Wings’ roster, it was inevitable that the Stanley Cup would be taking a trip to the Scandinavian country this summer. And the trophy’s tour started off with a blessed event - a baptism.

Tomas Holmstrom Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup

The CBC reports that Tomas Holmstrom was the first Swedish Wing to get to spend time with Lord Stanley’s silverware, and the forward decided to use his day with the Cup by helping out with a friend’s special occasion:

It was at the suggestion of the Red Wings forward that Robert Sundstrom decided to incorporate the Stanley Cup into the baptism of his seven-week-old daughter Alva Felicia, during a ceremony outside Holmstrom’s hometown of Pitea in northern Sweden.

“Tomas came up with the idea when we were sitting in his summer cabin kitchen a week ago,” Sundstrom said. “Me and my wife thought it would be fun to christen our daughter in such a priceless object.”

How nice. Surprisingly, its not the first time the Cup was used so religiously. After Colorado won it in 1996, the Avalanche’s Sylvain Lefebvre baptized his own daughter in the trophy.

Henrik Zetterberg Emma Andersson

It will be interesting to see if any of Tomas’ teammates can top Holmstrom’s holy help. Hopfeully Henrik Zetterberg can convince his girlfriend Emma Andersson to share her cups with the Cup.
