7:33 PM The Austin American-Stateman reports that the Aug. 7 death of the mother of Drew Brees, 59-year-old Mina Brees, has been ruled a suicide: "Autopsy and investigation found her death was attributed to ingestion of a large quantity of prescription medications." Ms. Brees died at a friend's house.

7:16 PM Norm Clarke of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports, "Manny Pacquiao would be 8-5 favorite against Floyd Mayweather, according to Art Manteris, Station Casinos VP of sports book operations."

7:00 PM If you've ever been to Los Angeles, you know how far the Rose Bowl is from UCLA and what a logistic nightmare the place is. Jerry Crowe of the L.A. Times has a piece today on why an on-campus stadium for UCLA was scuttled in the '60s. Sad.

6:35 PM More fun with Joey Porter today with this nonsensical statement to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel: "At the end of the day it was never about me. Last week proves it's not about me. You guys make it about [me], and that's fine." What does that mean?

Spooky: Roberto Clemente Foreshadows His Death

PSAMP has video of Roberto Clemente in the summer of 1972, discussing his chances of reaching 3,000 hits before the end of the season:

Clemente: “You never know, if I’m alive, I said before ‘you never know’ because God tell you how long you are going to be here so you never know what can happen tomorrow.”

History lesson: On September 30, 1972, in a game at Three Rivers Stadium, Clemente hit a double off Jon Matlack of the New York Mets for his 3,000th hit. It was the last at-bat of his career during a regular season.

Clemente died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve, 1972, while on a relief mission to Nicaragua.
