I think they should go independent and do the WCC for other sports. If a Big 12 or PAC-12 opportunity presents itself in the next year or two then they can strongly consider it. If they really have long term plans to stay independent that would be OK too.

BYU has a great football team but other sports they aren’t that good with the exception of basketball. Their team isn’t the best in the MWC in basketball. They want to move to the WAC to get easier competition and build their programs. Then they might go independent fully.

I can see the Y going Independent, but don’t see going to the WAC for the rest of there sporting programs. Why not stay in the MWC or go all Independent. Better yet I would like to see the Big 10 expand to 12 & bring in BYU & BSU or TCU

This sort of a setup sets the stage for BYU to join the Big XII-2, if it wants to. The independence will prove to all that BYU football is a financially viable commodity that can add value to any of the BCS conferences (including the Pac-12, that rejected it for reasons of religious bigotry).

Shouldn’t BYU try to join the Big XII - 2? That conference is supposedly set up to allow teams to develop their own TV stations. The Mountain West can then take some other top WAC teams and soldier on with fewer mormons.

One problem with that: BYU Athletics Cable TV doesn’t exist, at least at this moment. But with BYU due for a final decision on its conference affiliation in the next two weeks, the timing of that “mysterious” press release is intriguing to say the least.
