I'm a LL ump, and if that's what they called (assisting the runner by high 5ing him) that is a bad call. In umpires school, they teach you this, and since it IS a judgment call, the ump should have used better judgment. I do not agree that it isn't a judgment call, because there is no rule that says you cannot touch a player. It says you cannot ASSIST them. If your high five or back slap when he passes does not assist them (it's a home run trot, for goodness sakes), there is no call to be made. You must judge whether or not it is actually assisting them when the coach touches them.

"Rule 7.09
it is interference by a batter or a runner when:

h) in the JUDGMENT of the umpire, the base coach at 3rd base, or 1st base, by touching or holding the runner, PHYSICALLY ASSISTS that runner in returning to or leaving 3rd base or 1st base;"

The runner will be called out in this case. IF this story is accurate, the umpires misinterpreted this rule, IMO.

note: all emphasis mine in quoting this rule.

It's mother's like that that are ruining kid's sports. Instead of teaching her son that people make mistakes, she makes the tournament come to a halt. It would have been nice if she would have considered everybody else's situation by delaying the game. I know if I was a parent, either on her son's team or the other team, I would be furious with her seeing how I probably only took a certain amount of time off from work to see my kid's games. She should be embarassed of herself and her son should be embarassed for her to. Another summer lowlight in kid's sports. Shame on you!!!!
