Soon All Of Our Movies Will Feature Gina Carano

We ruminated yesterday on Rampage Jackson forsaking his scheduled UFC bout with Rashad Evans to run off and star in a movie adaptation of “The A-Team.” Now another MMA star is heading to big screen, only this time the project is a bit more prestigious (sorry, Mr. T).

Gina Carano

Gina Carano, loser of the recent  “Carano vs. Cyborg” showdown with Cristiane Santos but still a winner to me, has been chosen for the leading role in the Steven Soderbergh spy thriller “Knockout.” See what they did there with the double meaning in the title? Oh Hollywood, you witty weaver of irony.

From VARIETY:

Scripted by Lem Dobbs, “Knockout” casts Carano as a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes. The film is a closer cousin to “La Femme Nikita” and “Kill Bill” than “Million Dollar Baby,” in that it doesn’t take place in the fight ring. Rather, Soderbergh considers the film as a flat out action film in the James Bond mold, and will shoot in locations around the world that include Ireland, Turkey and the U.S.

Soderbergh will surround Carano will name actors in supporting roles. Soderbergh, who earlier this summer exited a plan to direct “Moneyball” for Columbia Pictures, most recently directed “The Girlfriend Experience,” a pic that starred Sasha Grey in her first performance in a legit film.

Side note: “The Girlfriend Experience,” was the most expensive movie I ever saw, mostly due to the cost of the wild horses it took to drag me there.

Could her first loss in the ring, plus this movie deal, mark the beginning of the end of Carano’s MMA career? To what depths will women’s MMA sink without Carano around? We may get a chance to find out.

Although Soderbergh is responsible for quality items such as “Traffic,” “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Erin Brokovich,” not everyone is looking forward to “Knockout.” From the VARIETY comments:

this is outrageous, she can’t act at all. in Ring Girls she was dubbed over a la early Swartzenager, but i guess who knows, look how that worked out for him. I guess she’s the new Van Damme. she’s also naturally fat when not dehydrated from cutting weight. I’m fascinated to see how this train wreck turns out. — Posted by: Jordan
