Shanahan Headed To Redskins? Don’t Do It, Mike!

So Carolina has just scored to lead the Redskins 20-17 with about nine minutes left, perhaps sealing the fate of the embattled Jim Zorn. But word on the street is that Zorn was a lame duck anyway, no matter what he does over the next few weeks.

Jim Zorn, Daniel Snyder, Mike Shanahan

Or, as FOX SPORTS noted today, Dead Coach Walking. The next coach for the Redskins? Mike Shanahan. Maybe.

When owner Daniel Snyder hired a consultant to oversee game plans recently, that should have been a signal to Zorn to start packing. Both of the other times that Snyder’s done that in the past, notes FOX SPORTS (Mike Nolan and Steve Spurrier), the head coach was a gone the very next season. What a mess. Could there be a more dysfunctional owner/franchise is sports right now? I mean not within the Oakland city limits?

Jim Zorn appears to be a dead coach walking with old-timer Sherm Lewis hired to oversee his game plans. Word has it Snyder approached former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan in the offseason to be his head coach and has made another attempt during the season, only to be rebuffed both times. Despite being owed millions by Denver owner Pat Bowlen, Shanahan does want to return to the sidelines, but he wants to wait until the league season ends and consider his options.

Meanwhile, FOX’s Jay Glazer is saying that Shanahan could come on board with the Redskins this season, on an interim basis, then taking the job full time next season after the Redskins have completed a league-mandated (fake) coaching search.

Of course the Redskins are denying all this. From PRO FOOTBALL TALK:

Per FOX SPORTS’ John Czarnecki: The first run was made at Shanahan came in the offseason.  The more recent attempt came during the 2009 season.

A team source strongly denied the report in a Sunday morning communication to PFT.

Having traversed the Swamps Of Sadness (Al Davis and the Raiders) and lived to tell about it, I can’t imagine Shanahan entering a situation with another crazy owner, unless Snyder handed him the keys to everything, including his yacht. Even Pete Carroll was smart enough to stay away from this mess.
