Forget that Michael Jackson movie; what I want to know is who is going to play Secretariat in the upcoming Walt Disney film on the horse’s life. They need five lookalikes to play the title role, and they have four; with the fifth lucky leading man to be chosen from a group of unknowns at The Secretariat Festival at the Bourbon County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
Yes, it’s a Hollywood cattle call for horses. A Secretariat lookalike contest between 20 hopeful horses will determine the winner, and it’s my opinion that they could have very easily made this into a reality series where the winner also gets to marry Flavor Flav.
There will be 20 equine hopefuls in the contest, with a judging panel that includes Secretariat’s rider, Ron Turcotte; lead wrangler Rusty Hendrickson; and Meadow Stable exercise riders Charlie Davis and Jim Gaffney. The top three finishers will split $5,000 in prize money.
Filming of the movie is scheduled to begin at the end of September. Locations include Keeneland and Churchill Downs. The film stars Diane Lane as Penny Chenery, Secretariat’s owner
Secretariat trivia: Did you know that Secretariat essentially died of laminitis, the same hoof ailment that felled Barbaro two years ago? Secretariat was euthanized in 1989 at the age of 19, and a post-mortem exam showed that his heart weighed 22 pounds, the largest ever recorded for a racehorse. He sired 600 foals.
