Cubs Catcher Blanco’s Brother Killed In Venezuela

It’s rough enough having to play for the Cubs every year, but things have taken a gigantic turn for the worse for backup catcher Henry Blanco, whose brother was found murdered in Venezuela on Monday after being kidnapped for ransom.

Athletes from poor foreign countries are occasionally targets of extortion plots by thugs who see an opportunity to make huge amounts of money by kidnapping the player’s relatives. But the plots are usually thwarted in some way, or sometimes settled for cash. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen this time.

Plaxico Burress Suspended, Season Shot To Hell

Not waiting for Roger Goodell to rule on their receiver’s recent raucous activities, the New York Giants have, ahem, jumped the gun and put Plaxico Burress on suspension.

The NEWARK STAR-LEDGER reports that the team has suspended Plaxico for four games, which coincidentally is the same number of regular season contests left on the G-Men’s schedule. More importanly, Burress has been placed on the non-injury football list - meaning that Plax can kiss any postseason play goodbye.

Report: Bellotti Quitting As Oregon Ducks Coach

KPTV in Oregon today reports that Mike Bellotti is quitting today as football coach of the Univ. of Oregon. Ducks assistant Chip Kelly will take over head coaching duties.

(Hope the liquor cabinet is locked tonight in the Bellotti abode!)

Numerous reports out of the Pacific Northwest indicated that Bellotti today would announce he was stepping down, but not give a timetable. But KPTV reports the move will be made after this season.

UPDATE: Of course, KPTV had it wrong. Bellotti announced this afternoon that he has no timetable on the move. (more…)

Pete Rose Still Cherishing Those Last Few Hairs

The scene plays out nearly everywhere: A man in his 50s or 60s tries to ward off the cold, unrelenting grasp of age by doing everything he can to hang onto to those last few remaining hairs on his head. Sometimes, that means the hilarious comb-over. Other times, it’s the toupee that gets the call. Still others resort to that creepy spray-on hair. Pete Rose, meanwhile, has gone an entirely different route: Paying a high-priced stylist to manage the few hairs he has left.

From the LA TIMES comes an amusing first-hand anecdote of one of the more unique celebrity sightings in recent memory: Pete Rose at AMP Salon at the Palms. The salon, owned and operated by celebrity stylist Michael Boychuck, is a hub for celebrities in Vegas. Of course, most of the celebrities that get their hair done there actually have hair on their heads!

Leach Flies To Seattle To Interview For UW Job?

For a team that is likely to go 0-12 after this weekend’s obligatory loss to California, there sure are a lot of people interested in coaching at the University of Washington.

Mike Leach, who was just named Big 12 Coach of the Year, was reportedly on a commercial flight to Seattle yesterday (way to cut costs, there, UW). Fresno State’s Pat Hill has been mentioned as a candidate. And Jim Mora, Jr., who created a stir two years ago when he openly pined for the UW job when he was still employed by the Falcons, is perhaps considered the front runner. Leach’s trip yesterday is maybe the strangest, considering these kinds of trips are usually made on private planes so as not to arouse suspicion.

QB Anderson Injury Brings Out Browns Boobirds

It’s a long-standing tradition that whenever a player goes down with an injury, no matter which uniform he wears, when they leave the field the crowd shall rise up as one and offer their support in the form of a hearty cheer. Apparently, the classy fans in Cleveland must have skipped that fan etiquette class. After their own starting quarterback Derek Anderson was being carried off the field, they went boo-crazy.

(They’re not saying “Boo”, they’re saying “You Suck”)

While being carried off with a damaged knee ligament, Anderson reported hearing boos coming from the crowd. “They were cheering the fact that I was hurt. They don’t like me. That’s well known.”

Brandon Jacobs and some of his Giants teammates were trying to help take some of the heat off teammate Plaxico Burress and his ongoing firearms case, but they may have brought a whole lot of negative attention on themselves, instead.

Not A Repeat: Giants WR Involved In Gun Incident

Amid this entire “Plaxico Burress Shot Himself In The Leg Like That Cheddar Bob Guy From 8 Mile” controversy, there has been a rather salient question: Why, exactly, was Plaxico packing heat in the first place? And no, “Suicidal Leg Syndrome” is not a valid answer (though Pfizer is making a pill for it anyway).

(You have to admit, that’s a really good drawing of a gun.)

Though we can’t know the real answer unless and until Plaxico tells us, a pretty good place to start would be Plaxico’s fellow receiver, Steve Smith; according to Tiki Barber at NBC (via NEWSDAY.COM), Smith was held up at gunpoint as he returned to his home in a gated community after a night out with friends Monday night. Okay, Tuesday at 4 a.m., but whatever.

“Ah, but if Smith lives in a gated community, how could he get robbed at his front door?”, you might ask. And there’s a simple and kind of disturbing answer waiting for you (proceeding emphasis ours):
