SD Teen Runs Thousands Of Miles For Sick Friend

Don Norcross of he SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE jogs up the inspiring story of a high school senior who’s been running all over the place in order to help a sick friend.

Nick Hollon has been running & raising money in a show of support for Andrew Bundy, a fellow Poway High classmate who’s suffering from leukemia. Back in August, Nick had set himself a modest goal - run 3,000 miles and raise $10,000 for leukemia & lymphoma research.

The plan is part of Hollon’s high school senior project. When he did the math, Nick realized he had a lot of ground to cover:

Starting in mid-August, it broke down to about 75 miles a week. He would run 13 miles a day Monday through Thursday, take Friday off, run 26 miles on Saturday, then take Sundays off.

His trips have included a 100-mile run on May 17, mostly around & around the Poway High School track. The fact that a lacrosse game was going on didn’t bother the spectators, who made many donations inside his trackside tent.

As of Thursday, Hollon has covered 2,913 miles while raising $9,045. He hope to add another big chunk to the total by racing in San Diego’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon this Sunday.

And when will Nick reach his 3,000-mile plateau? Next Thursday, on a treadmill inside the Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt Shop in Poway. The store’s owners are already saying they’ll donate the day’s profits to Nick’s cause.

So, if you happen to stop by, say hello, and buy yourself a double scoop. Or if you can’t make it out but still want to help, visit Nick’s website, 3000 For The Cure.

Fantastic! It’s so refreshing to see kids who “get it” at a young age. It gives us hope for the future. Thanks for the story Jason.
