Will wonders never cease? The Kansas City Royals - yes, the Royals - are still sitting atop the AL Central, as they completed a sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 4-1 victory at Comerica Park on Thursday.
These are historic times in KC, indeed, as it’s been a while since Royals fans have witnessed success of any kind.
This is the furthest into the season that the Royals have sat alone on top since 2003. And it’s only the fourth time in the club’s 40-year history that they started out 3-0.
More remarkable, this only the second time ever that the Royals have opened a season with a road series sweep. The last time? 1977. And who was it against?
Yep, the Tigers.
As Bob Dutton of the KANSAS CITY STAR noted, “That was so long ago that George Brett batted leadoff in all three games.”
Although it’s still very early in the season, some celebration should be in order. Maybe George can re-open his restaurant.
But it’s hard to tell which is more surprising - the Royals’ regal start, or the high-payrolled Tigers’ toothless beginning.
