Here’s a surreal sight we might never see again, so we’ve captured it for posterity’s sake:
Yes, both the Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays are in first place.
Granted, it’s very early in the season, and KC is technically tied for first, while TB was the benefactor of a Yanks-Jays rainout.
But these aren’t some Grapefruit League don’t-really-count standings. This is the real deal. And it may be a sign of things to come in the 2008 season.
The Rays’ spring-training brawl with the Bronx Bombers may have finally given some backbone to MLB’s perennial sad-sack club. And the Royals may have been inspired by SbB’s stellar performance in SPORTING NEWS’ 1986 Strat-O-Matic season. (Only 7 more wins to .500! Yeah!) Could these bottom-feeding franchises turn the MLB world topsy-turvy?
Ask us again 161 games later.
But hey, might as well celebrate the Royals’ & Rays’ triumphs while we can. Who knows if or when mankind will ever witness such a remarkable occurrence again.
