Rockies & Padres Take 22 Innings To Finish Game

Fans at PETCO Park - at least those that stayed around - certainly got their money’s worth Thursday night, as the Colorado Rockies eventually beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 - after 22 innings.

Petco Park Padres 22 inning scoreboard

The SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE reports that the contest between NL West rivals lasted 6 hours & 16 minutes, finally ending at 1:21 a.m. local time Friday morning - that’s 4:21 a.m. on the East Coast. Those that really love pitchers’ duels would’ve exploded with ecstasy at PETCO, as the game was scoreless up until the 14th.

So, how did those who stuck it out at the ballpark carry on?

Some Padres players amused themselves in the 18th by taping up the head of a stuffed ram and placing it on the front bench in the dugout. After the 18th, shortly after midnight, the sprinklers came on in the Park at the Park, a grassy knoll beyond the bleachers in right-center.

There was a seventh-inning stretch, a 14-inning stretch and finally, a 21st-inning stretch.

Due to the insane length of the game, we wonder if the remaining fans singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” eventually broke into “They’re Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Ha!”

Thursday night’s contest, the 17th game in MLB history to go at least 22 innings, was also the longest in both teams’ histories. The last time a game went as long was back in 1993, when the Twins beat the Indians in 22. And the last time an NL game lasted that long was farther back in 1989, when the Dodgers beat the Expos (remember them?), also in 22.

So, hope both teams got enough rest - because they have a day game today!

Nah, just kidding. But wouldn’t it be hilarious if they did?
