Retief On Wounded Tiger: “His Knee Wasn’t Sore”

The LONDON TIMES reports today that former U.S. Open champ Retief Goosen, who finished 14th at Torrey Pines, has now said twice that Tiger Woods was exaggerating the extent of his knee injury during the most recent U.S. Open.

Goosen’s comments are especially ironic comments considering the breaking news today that Woods is scheduled to have season-ending knee surgery.

Retief Goosen Tiger Woods

Goosen:

“I think so. It just seemed that when he hit a bad shot his knee was in pain and on his good shots he wasn’t in pain. You see when he made the putts and he went down on his knees and was shouting, ‘Yeah’, his knee wasn’t sore.”Nobody really knows if he was just showing off or if he was really injured. I believe if he was really injured, he would not have played.”

The South African has since backed off those comments … slightly (all the while without knowing about Woods’ impending knee surgery).

“He’s got a sore knee, yes, and at the end of the day it’s a great achievement by Tiger winning his 14th major. “But I wouldn’t really know how sore or not his knee was. Obviously if his knee was really bad he would have withdrawn.

I won’t say I knew he was faking it. How would I know? Anyway, it’s great to see that he’s recovering well and that he’s back on form.”

Now there’s a wholehearted apology!

For those of you who don’t think there’s jealousy of Tiger among Tour golfers, I give you exhibit A.

Now I’m wondering, just what would color South African Goosen’s reality-impaired reaction to Woods’ heroic victory?

More on Woods’ season-ending surgery from San Diego’s CBS 4:

Tiger Woods will miss rest of golf season, says a person familiar with the decision.

Woods had knee surgery to clean out cartilage April 15, but later suffered a stress fracture while preparing for his return to golf. That’s what caused his pain during the U.S. Open.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement was not official. Woods was expect to discuss his future on his Web site later Wednesday.

The Woods surgery news has yet to hit worldwide, but I’d love to hear Goosen’s reaction after the official announcment is made later today.
